Spinks describes an Edward 3 penny as having an "annulet in each quarter". What is an annulet? Thanks!

a little circle , each segment is classed as a quarter, they also appear on the obverse (heads side) sometimes on various issues

Thanks Craigy! Do they sometimes appear in pairs, like a figure 8? Like this?

From the latin for ring - anulus.

They can appear in pairs or singly, and can be large or small, complete or broken. It all helps with the chronology.
