Guest Guest Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Hi,I recently bought a Gold Sovereign boxed Gulf War set, for £60.99. I`m told that this was a good price, can anyone confirm this for me.This coin is the first in a collection of want I`m hoping will grow. I`d very much like to hear from other collectors as regards to the fact, do Gold Sovereigns hold there value. I collect Military Medals, and find that, when I come to part with them, never get back what I paid for them, is this the case with Gold Sovereigns.Hope to hear from someone.Kind regards,Gordon. Chris Perkins Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 What is a Gold sovereign Gulf war set?Whatever it is, if it contains a full mint condition Sovereign, then yes £60.99 is pretty fair.My advice: Don't be fooled by pretty packaging, or the fact that a coin once belonged to a soldier. I would image those facts would be unlikely to ever make the coin worth more that it would be if it was just a loose coin.If you collect military things, then by all means, collect Sovereigns issued to soldiers that served in wars, but if you want to collect sovereigns, find respectable dealers and buy them loose they'll probably work out cheaper. At the moment a Sovereign is worth about £53 for the gold content, so that's the minimum thoeretically that it should be worth. Gold prices have a major affect on the common and newer Sovereign prices.I have a few:http://www.predecimal.com/forsale/gold.htm Quote
mint_mark Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 And, don't buy from the Royal Mint assuming it's a good price because you're buying direct... they charge a substantial premium. For a military connection, someone on ebay sells 1925SA sovereigns (SA means minted in South Africa) saying that the date was issued to British commandos during the war.It reminds me of that James Bond film where he has a strip of sovereigns concealed in his briefcase Quote
