CRAIGSD Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 I HAVE A COIN I GOT ON EBAY.THE 2X2 SAYS "GERMAN STATES JEW PENNY" I SEARCHED THROUGH MY KRAUSE 'GERMAN COINS' BOOK AND FOUND NOTHING ON IT. ITS ABOUT ONE PFENNING SIZE,COPPER AND DATED 1819.IT HAS A SIMPLE SHIELD WITHIN A WREATH ON ONE SIDE AND A ROMAN NUMBER '1' ON TOP OF THE DATE WITHIN A WREATH ON THE OTHER.DOES ANY ONE HAVE ANY IDEA ABOUT THIS? THANX Quote
Master Jmd Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 Sounds like a token to me...that is why you did not find it in Krause (or does Krause list tokes?)... Quote
Emperor Oli Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 There are early 19th-century small copper coins, known as Jew pfennigs, whose origin nobody knows with certainty. They were privatley issued for speculation and circulated until 1823 when Frankfurt banned them. As far as I know, the name has nothing to do with jews themselves - it's not some kind of jew-exclusive money. I think yours is the one below... Quote
Andy Bruce Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 Well researched Oli.And, may I add, a very quick response time. Quote
