damowain Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 I've been looking at a lot of different coins being new to collecting. I was looking at the commemorative coins something like what the royal mint does. What are your thoughts of buying these types of coins as an investment overall? I dont mind buying them if I like the look of them regardless, I was just curious if coins like this could be bought as some sort of investment aswell as I saw an article saying that some dont sell well/cant be put in the bank etc. Quote
Rob Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Don't bother. Ever since the 1935 Silver Jubilee crown, there has been more struck than the market can absorb. They made just over 700,000 of them, and even today are only worth tens of pounds. The first George VI crown is not so bad, but the Festival of Britain crowns head a long line of things that are worth a few pounds at the most. Churchill crowns, Silver Jubilee crowns, how many do you want? I will sell you a bag of 50 at a bit over face. The main problem is that there is no precious metal content to encourage their melting down. By all means get an example of each, but don't imagine for one minute they will be a good investment.
