George111 Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Did any of our kings ie Henry II or Henry III ect have copper coinage ? Quote
Colin G. Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Not a simple question to precisely and fully answer in detail, however copper coinage I suppose was first really introduced with the Harington Farthings under the reign of James I, although you could argue whether these were "official" coinage. Prior to that you could consider Jetons which were considered likely to have circulated, but again not in an official capacity. Considering the period you are stating in isolation, then no there was not. Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 We had copper alloy issues in the Northumbrian kingdom (not the most beautiful of coinages...), but otherwise Colin is right in that we don't see any real copper until James I. Quote
George111 Posted March 28, 2016 Author Posted March 28, 2016 Looks very likely I found a jetton in this case, who/what is on it I will have to do a bit of research Thanks Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 If you can post images someone here might be able to help. Quote
jelida Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Most of the English jettons of this period (or perhaps somewhat later) had a central punch mark or perforation, but could look very similar to Edwardian silver pennies. Post a pic, as suggested. Quote
