  1. I have bought at auction a 'Britains First Decimal Coins' set in a hard red case with gold lettering. What is unusual about this set is that the coins are wrapped in possibly a silver foil. To look at them you would not think them wrapped or anything other than a solid metal coin. The case is similar to the hard cases the Royal Mint used at the time, such as the ones used for the Accession 50p coin. If anybody has any ideas it would be much appreciated.

    Metal Wrapped Decimal Coin Set

I don't think they are fakes, that is why I posted on here for your opinions. If it was one of the companies that prey on the elderly and advertise 'silver and gold' coins in the back of the Sunday supplements why use a wrap? Plating would be much cheaper.

    Metal Wrapped Decimal Coin Set

I have that is why I think it is a metal foil wrap, rather than plating. Also they are several grammes heavier than the normal coin.

    First English Hammered Coin

In a job lot I acquired a small silver hammered coin, (I will post a picture later), but I think it is a silver penny from 1275 to 1279 an Edward I long cross one, so I am pleased about this.

    First English Hammered Coin

Second picture of the tail, I bought this in a job lot the coin was in a box, which contained a couple of sovereigns and smaller gold coins. This is where the previous owner had kept his more interesting stuff. I think it is an Edward I coin, however your expertise gentlemen would be more than welcome.

    Just An Idea

Seems like an excellent idea, I will follow suit

    Churchill

Peter I have had a dalliance with MGs over the years too, when I return back to dear old Blighty I think that another will be in order, probably the earliest MGF vvc I can get my hands on. With reference to silver I read a few years back that silver will in the long term increase due to its conductive and anti-bacterial properties, the first increase was probably a blip due to the then current financial situation, but long term I hope it will increase. Otherwise what will I do with all the old worn florins?

    Churchill

As part of a job lot which included a George III 3 shilling bank token, I got my first common all garden Churchill memorial crown, not the most interesting of coins from a value perspective but I did like the engraving, it impressed me with its art work.

    Part Of A Job Lot

I bought a small job lot, the two modern Royal Mint coins a silver £5 coin and a 20th ounce Britannia, with the lot is a Keiser commenerative apparently he is some bloke of the Russia Today TV channel who complains about bankers, but his 1 ounce 'Global Insurrection Against Banker Occupation' round was in the lot. Not really bothered or interested in the politics especially of someone who works for Russia Today (I lived in Ukraine for a number of years) but I liked it as a example of the whole crash era. The second interesting item is a again a large lump of silver, probably only really the silver to recommend it but a London Mint Office 5 ounce Double Leopard. Quite a nice piece if you don't view it either as a coin or a thing of real value other than its intrinsic value.
  18. I have bought a job lot at auction and one of the items was a silver one pound coin (1983) it has a lustre finish, which I think is due to the ageing process. I will try to post pictures, I have made one attempt using my SLR but will make another. Advice on the lustre process please and I will use another device to try to get the pictures on line.

    Introduction And Confession

Hello folks, As you may gather from my forum name, I am called Simon and currently based in Slovakia where I work. I come to your esteemed forum from starting out as a 'silver stacker', my main interest is as a stacker but I am developing an interest in the numismatic area. I am enjoying reading the forum and thanks for having me. Simon

    Introduction And Confession

Thanks for the response, I have just acquired my first kookaburra which I think is an excellent coin and having seen the older Britannia coins I am looking out for some of those too. I saw the Clovis series and thought wow, so they are on my acquisition list too. I was bidding on some coins at an auction yesterday, I bought some modern case items, but I saw the hammered coins from the middle ages and that has got me thinking that some fairly good examples are affordable particularly the Crusader States and some Commonwealth items so that will be an area of exploration for me.
