    George 1st Farthings

Well the Soho mint coins were the first of a new era so it is a good thing they are a great design. I must admit I love the cartwheels which are sadly missing in the 1797 format of halfpennies and farthings. There again there are the patterns of the farthing and halfpenny and the restrikes i surpose

yes , Q.C went a bit out of the window in william the thirds time partly to do with the great recoinage of all the old hammered silver. This put loads of strain on the mint and various unqualified folks at the mint were given a job to do and little time to finish it as well , resulting in loads of interesting little mistakes , and lots of fun for us collecting them 310 years on. One of the best and most common of these is the 1701 halfpenny with the gigantic O a really belter Things did get better under George the first and in fact the coins of Anne (the farthings ) in particular are stunningly well made with really attractive designs which hinted of the greatness to come in the 19th cent

The 1717 farthing i would say is worth around £70 so it is not really a pocket money item , in fact after my 30 or so years coin collecting it is still missing from my collection , so you have a least one person on here who feels jealous. The 1719 coin really is a £10 or £15 item, the small 9 is in fact normal
  4. yes very true they must have worn out pockets really fast and as we have no coin of that size now i am sure they were not popular with the public. I do guess that as they were the only thing to use between the gold and the florin or halfcrown they were grudgingly accepted by the public who would at least not have been worried that they had lost a high value coin if they had a couple of crowns instead of a gold half sov.
  5. Cartwheels seems to be on the right track , though i would doubt most crowns circulated much after 1914 , i suspect the silver would have been put towards the war effort. Remember though as they became more scarce more would be taken out of circulation so this would just feed on itself till they all disappeared very quick

    Your dream coin?

1954 penny for me - cannot be beat
  7. item number 361098643716 TRICK OR TREAT!!!! TRICK IN MY OPINION

    Ebay trick or treat?

OMG it got £260 someone out there has made a real expensive mistake
  9. yes I remember they had the great recoinage of all the hammered silver to do so corners probably got cut - remember these coins were made on a milling press and not spewed out in huge quantity by automated machines .
  10. Surely it is the coin that is rusted - the royal mint never uses rusted dies it scraps them at the first signs appear
  11. perhaps field damage is the same as corrosion in the coin gradeing companies eye. I must admit these folks tend to talk in a different way to us on here
  12. Unfortunately "fantasy" is also a word used when selling lots of modern rubbish that most true coin collectors would not touch with a barge pole.
  13. Is that a small corrosion patch on the top near Brittania's helmet ?something is going on around there but I could not be sure without having the coin in hand
  14. I can find very little that would stop that 1869 penny from being slabbed. Its near EF but looks like a slightly weak strike

    Rare £2 coins

The rio coin is one that seems to have been released into circulation in my area, I have found several they are worth keeping in mint grade . Mary rose £2 coins and the tube £2 coins are actually rarer than you might think. The rarest are of course the 2002 Commonweath coins as stated above . Dickens coins are not worth any premium, though they might be if kept in mint grade for a few years. The spade guinea coins are worth considering as well
  16. Looking through the compleated listings on ebay I came across a small lot of farthings including an unidentified 1860 mule , two bidders had spotted it so there was no really bargain for either of them . Seems really strange that so many people put ungenuine mules on there a pass them off as the real thing and yet a experienced dealer cannot spot what is surely a classic rarity , even if in low grade. Anyway i am sure the coin reached about its true value at around £100 or so you could probably have got £150 for it properly identified so i surpose the other 9 or so farthings were free in effect. There really cannot be many more unidentified out there now as most all of them must be in collectors hands.

    Ebay trick or treat?

yep most of his other items are just horrible items worn out rubbish (ahh but at least you don't have to worry if it's genuine) the northunberland shilling sticks out like a pearl amongst swine
  18. Ahh yes but also if you get really short of money also the FIRST you might sell as they would be very popular , I supose the main thing that would prompt you to sell it would be be being short of cash. If your not short of cash , selling the coin becomes sort of a No No .........

Can Anyone ID this for me?

That king looks really grumpy - prob caused by being on a beach for 500 years . he would prob have a nice tan though
  20. I am just wondering that when someone does get a "DREAM COIN" like any of the above , do they want to keep hold of it at all costs or does money enter into it , if say someone offers double or even treble what you paid for it. just a thought

    Charles I half crown

Easy a good fine , prob better . grading hammered coins is a total Nightmare
  23. in my opinion first coin is good fine and the second fine+ both very rare
  24. I it london mint office rubbish again? They keep on changing their name in there new ads ( but same old overpriced rubbish for sale) now because of the low reputation they have.
  25. The reason is that simply few people kept these coins as investments/keepsakes/collectors items one of the reasons being that a florin or a halfcrown was probably an half an hours wage for most people . Coins were only seriously hoarded from 1961 onwards as people got richer and had more money to spend on hobbies anyway. A raft of books on coins also helped including the check your change series and cw pecks bmc on coper tin and bronze coins which had few fans before his book was published.
