Hi I've been offered a set of Gold Coins originally sold in limited numbers (just 499) by the London Mint Office. The set is no longer wanted by the current owner. I recognise there is a difference between the Royal Mint and the London Mint Office but can anyone give me an idea of desirability being they're not Royal Mint. I know it's a bit weak but can anyone help with this small hammered coin ? (approx 15mm) The obverse appears to be a crowned bust looking right. The reverse has that odd centre to it. Any help would be great ! Cheers

I've got 2 of these coins, I'd assumed they were identical even having had a good look. But, they're most definitely quite different. They're very tapered from the obverse so they naturally sit face up. If they had holes in them I'd think they were buttons !! Any ideas ?

Hi This is a decent size coin, 36mm and I'd say slightly thicker than our old copper penny. Strangely, the detail simply looks like it isn't struck up rather than being worn away. Any thoughts on that? Again, it must be Asia somewhere but I haven't got a clue otherwise. Does anyone specialise in this area ? Cheers

This is the first of 3 coins I'm stuck with. Can anyone help point me in the right direction so-to-speak ! Actually quite a chunky coin 3mm thick. The rim is oddly thicker than the body of the coin. Diameter 23mm

I think S3609 is correct and makes sense. The photo is correct (2nd bust). Surely E* must be "below bust"... where else would it be ?!!! I understand "local dies" to be where the curls both turn to the right, as per the photo in S3615. Frankly, I'm suspicious this is an error in Spink and that in fact S3609A doesn't exist or has been superceded by S3615 Can anyone prove otherwise ?

I'm currently looking at my 2010 45th edition of Spink which is a couple of years old. In particular I'm trying to attribute Anne 1708 Shillings with the local Edinburgh bust (the two curls at the top of the bust both turn to the right). I'm confused with the descriptions between S3609A and S3615. Since S3608 refers to 2nd Bust... S3609 (similar) is also 2nd Bust with E*. What therefore is S3609A (( 2nd Bust I assume because it states "Similar" )) Local dies ? S3615 makes more sense because it doesn't refer to a previous coin as being "similar". Do you see what I mean ? There are pictures of S3615 & S3609 which are correct but I can't understand what S3609A refers to. Does anyone have a more recent Spink? Has this changed or am I misunderstanding the comments ? HELP !! ...please. Thanks

Hi Struggled with this one. It's got the lis in the centre of the reverse so I guess French or Dutch but can anyone help with a more specific attribuition? There's a bust and legend but I still can't find it so now being lazy and asking for help !! Cheers

Thanks everyone. That is all a lot of good information. I'm now missing 2001, 2002 and most of the 60's and 70's. It would be good if I could just get a few of the very older ones. I guess that 2007 EF £1100 should be Unc and the EF is missing ? Can you confirm please ? There's no hurry but if the missing years were available it would be really good. Thanks. Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me collate a specific coin price in past editions of Spink (previously Seaby) ? The coin is the 1887 gold Five Pound in grades F, VF, EF, Unc and Proof. Hi, Yes, I understand the point you make. The point I was making is that the Spink values indicate a rarity or perhaps imply a rarity. The rarer the coin the more expensive. Look at 1697 3rd bust. The Spink price for the 'y' is cheapest of all 1697 3rd busts whereas ESC rarity states 'C' should be more common. See what I mean? or perhaps Spink feel a lot of 'y' have come to market whereas 'C' haven't !! Cheers

I was wondering if there were any keen Shilling collectors for the 1696 & 1697 regions (B,C,E,N,Y,y) out there? I'm interested to compare what anyone considers are the relative rarities of these coins. Ignoring all the specific varieties, (no stops, overstrikes etc), these coins recorded for both Spink and ESC don't seem to agree. (surprise, surprise). For example, looking at 1696 1st bust only, Spink indicates 1696B is the commonest and 1696N is rarest. ESC rate them all as Scarce apart from 1696B and 1696Y which are Rare. Personally I find the Exeter occuring most frequesntly and the Y hardest. Has anyone got any thoughts on relative rarities of these coins. I know there are several varieties too which are unrecorded (or recorded glibly) but any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Cheers
