  1. Gulp... Ok I am framing this response for the next time the wife looks over my shoulder at my next acquisition
  2. Are coins your main business or a hobby? Or do you just fund your hobby by buying and selling coins..... Either way as you say you have been able to examine and research a large number of coins. I suppose a real lover of coins doesn't have to own a coin to get pleasure out of examining one
  3. Perhaps this thread should be removed before our spouses have a read.....
  4. I do but I do have a few specific targets as well....but I never seem to find them so I go back into headless chicken mode What I meant was, not what do you spend on a monthly basis but what is the maximum you would spend expressed as a percentage of your monthly income. For example if your monthly income (to make it easy) is £10,000 and the most you would spend on a coin is £1000 its 10% which is the equivalent to £100 if you are on £1,000 per month. I was just wondering what your relative financial commitment to your hobby is..... for example my most expensive coin so far was about at the 3% level.
  5. Here is a question I am nosey enough to want to know. I know that one mans £1000 is another mans 10p so what the question is: What percentage of your monthly income have or would you spend on a coin?
  6. But are they any good to use?
  7. I haven't had much success photographing my coins with my ordinary camera. I probably could do with a macro lens and a ring flash. However I saw this Linder Magnicam for sale I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this product?
  8. Great idea about the library, both Peck and Gouby ordered so I can have a look before deciding. Thanks
  9. That would be great to view on my I-pad
  10. Since Peck is quite hard to get hold of and quite expensive do you feel that Gouby ( I have a copy of Freeman ) are good enough together or should I still look out for a copy of Peck?
  11. I'm just too slow and tight with the money. If another copy comes your way I'll be better behaved.
  12. Drat.... Thanks. Give me his name and I'll hunt him down.
  13. I was watching a documentary the other day and the presenter was turning the pages of a beautiful illuminated manuscript with her bare fingers. It was stated that opinions had changed and that gloves were no longer worn to protect the pages. I was wondering how people her handle their coin collections. Gloves, no gloves, quickly encase them in plastic. Question 2 is how do you display your coins. I personally would like to be able to display the coin with a short discription to remind me what is special about the coin. Trays, envelopes , albums etc... Thanks in advance for any advice you can give an inexperienced collector.
  14. Again, new to the site so bear with me. Looking at the new acquisitions thread there are some beautiful photos of coins. Also I have been trying to practice grading coins using R.PCoins website. I have a decent SLR Nikon digital camera but I was wondering what kit you all use (lenses and flashes) to take your photos. Also any advice you can give. Thanks to you all. If only I had had the internet when i started collecting.....
  15. I collected coins about 15 years ago and now that I have retired I have time to get involved again. I have read quite a few threads and you seem to be a knowledgeable bunch so here are a few questions: 1. What is your preferred method of storage and why? 2. Which catalogues do you regularly use and which books would you recommend for background reading? 3. How do you catalogue your coins? Do you use computer records, professional software, photograph your coins. Paper and pen etc..... Thanks in advance
