Circulation penny collecto

Thanks for that Secret Santa - very helpful. I have now updated, re-categorised and added to my 1853 and 1866 pennies. (Secret Santa - i think you refer to one 1853 italic 5 dot penny known, so here is another one found which is a nice example)

A couple of things. An observation and then a question. Firstly the observation responding to those criticising me for adding a letter after the freeman number. Taking F38 as an example (1862 2+g) is followed by F39 (1862 6+g). Since i added the only 1862 (3+g) which was not catalogued by Freeman - i cannot see any other way to list it other than F38A, unless it be F38.5. Secondly a question, so that hopefully i can learn things from your expertise instead of just arguing about toy aeroplanes. It regards the heavy flan pennies of the early 1860s. I want to know the following: 1. What was the purpose of introducing them? (Some weighing up to 16.3g compared with the standard 9.5g were surely an unnecessary potential extra expense). 2. Why are there so few of them? 3. Do you think they were genuine circulation pennies or do you think they were Trial/Pattern pennies which just escaped into the general population? What i observe is a number of intelligent and rational comments on this forum (from Menger for example), combined with completely irrational and ignorant comments from others (best not to name them). Those who say it is wrong to put an approximate rarity value on coins for example must presume that they know better. Though personally i believe that people like Michael Gouby should not be insulted in this way when they list how many are currently known of various sub-varieties of Victorian pennies and are then presumably shredded by the same critics every time an extra one is discovered! As for accusing me of "braggadocio", i catalogued my pennies in a visual format for my own benefit as i enjoy looking at them, not to boast to people i dont even know. They represent over 50 years of hard work and joy, and even with good funding one still has to seek out and build up gradually over a long period of time. I started at age 11 and some of the coins listed are survivors from then, when i certainly didnt have good funding. To be rightfully proud of one's collection and efforts is not the same as braggadocio. (Finally, as for being compared to Norris Cole, it is an observation and not an insult and i already have my own names for several others on here too who i observe as having similarities to various other "celebrities"!!!)

Thank you Master Jmd - the "latest" acquisitions are actually the 1849 and the 1847 Medusa (upgraded) which i am thrilled with. As for Mr Jelida though, he seems rather bitter ( he rather reminds me of Norris Cole on Coronation Street). He needs to take a deep breath and try to understand that it is MY website and is for MY record-keeping and i will do it how it pleases me. It is not content for an erudite textbook to be published, nor am i trying to sell him anything. I simply put up the link to share the content if anyone was interested. And if some of the numbers are slightly dated from hundreds of coins then i will live with it............

Thank you for your valued comments. To respond - first to Mr Peckris, the 1926 proof is not missing as it is a collection of circulation pennies. Secondly to Stuart (coinery), apologies for the confusion. Thirdly to Jerry - i do not agree that it is wrong to say "probably R19" if between 2 and 5 are currently known, and if more are found one day i would change it to "probably R18". If you have FACTS that say otherwise then so be it. Otherwise it is not wrong to state the current number known as being probably correct. I also disagree with you that i should mix up my labelling by using Freeman here and Gouby there as it would be chaotic - i am quite happy to add a subsection to the Freeman number where it is primarily the same coin but perhaps with a different date width.

PS Hello Mr Coinery - and yes, i still want that 1808 penny when you are ready to sell it to me!!

My pennies are listed on www.penny-collection.com so i can now sit back and wait for you to tear my claim of having a very fine collection into pieces!!! I have read some of the threads on here and i certainly do NOT claim to have equal knowledge to many of those who post on this website - so i am very much hoping to learn new things from you!

Hello. This 1954 unique circulation penny was recently sold by Bernie Workman through Sovereign Auctions. In November 2024. I saw some speculation on this forum as to who the buyer might be who purchased this penny and a number of the other pennies at the same auction - and whether it may have been bought by an American investor. (I think it was someone called Secret Santa asking). Well i can put your mind at rest that i am neither American nor an investor - i am a private British collector who has specialised in primarily bronze circulation pennies for over 50 years (though i do now have quite a nice collection of copper pennies too). If you had designs on buying it you may actually have preferred an investor to have bought it, for as a collector i virtually never sell anything, and this penny will hopefully not be sold again or seen again, apart from being able to be viewed over the internet. I do believe that i have probably the finest collection of bronze pennies in the world (including the museums), though one or two of you may challenge that assertion, but my collection also includes one of the only 2 available 1933 circulation pennies and a host of other R19 and R20 pennies. Although i don't ever sell any of my coins as a rule, i am more than happy to share the collection with you through a link on here if anyone is interested in viewing it. Just let me know.
