    JMD...I have only one slabbed coin in my collection, a penny of George III. I bought it that way and have never bothered to remove it. Oli... It looks like a home grown British firm to me. Provided Chris has no qualms about it, I can post the website address so that you can see for yourselves.

    Unfortunately, we Americans have no monopoly on bad taste. I recently came across a British coin site where every single coin offered for sale is slabbed.

    Chris....According to the ebay listing "The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the minimum bid or Reserve amount". Even in ending his auction, this seller proved to be incapable of telling the truth. Perhaps he should go into politics.

    Sylvestor... I wonder if in making the Edward V reference, this fellow may have been thinking of Edward VIII and so out of the rare 1933 Penny of George V and the equally well known rarities of Edward VIII emerged the hybrid of Edward V. Nearly all of the 1933 pennies for which I've seen photos had been darkened at the mint. The one exception to this that comes to mind was sold at auction in 1972 and had been part of a 1933 proof set.

    I think that Iranian can be used...one could say an English penny Yes, i should definately stay out of foreign and ancient coins...sorry if i wasted your time I think that the language spoken in Iran is a Persian language called Farsi.

    I think I've seen at least three mint state 1869s up for sale in the past year -- this one, the one Dragonbrit had for sale, and one at a major auction in California. Anyone see any others?

    This auction ended early with the comment that the item was no longer available for sale. Did the same thing happen earlier with an 1869 Penny that Dragonbrit had up for auction on ebay?

    Jon... Some time ago, I had heard that this particular coin had once one of the finest known, but that in a misguided attempt to improve upon nature, it had been turned into an unnatural looking orange, then subsequently slabbed MS-65 Red by NGC. Any possibility that the toning occured after it was slabbed?

    And the winners of the Coincraft catalogues are... Emperor Oli and Half Penny Jon. Congratulations! A flip of the coin determined that Oli will receive the 1999 issue and Jon the 1998. If you each will let me know where to send the book to, I'll have them shipped out next week.

    So far I've heard from both Oli and Jon. I'll be at the ANA in Pittsburgh this Friday and will post the names of the winners on Saturday.

    So far Oli has requested to be in the "running". Any/all requests to be included should be made no later than this Friday (August 20th).

    I have two older editions of the Coincraft Standard Catalogue -- specifically 1998 and 1999 -- that are just gathering dust. I thought that there might be two other members of this forum that could use such a catalogue. My only stipulation is that you must currently be a student in good standing. If more than two of you are interested, I'll be writing your names down on slips of paper and choosing two names at random.

    A collector friend of mine emailed me today to take a look at this remarkable proof sixpence now up for sale on ebay. Curiously, the seller has a 100 percent positive feedback. 1879 Proof Sixpence
