I couldn't get into work yesterday (no trains and no buses in the London area due to heavy snow!) and was watching an episode of The Antiques Roadshow on TV. one of the items that came up was a 1933 penny which as we know is extremely rare. From what was shown it looked genuine but surely this must be unlikely. The suspicious thing was that it looked as if it had been in circulation. I feel sure that many people would have know about its rarity and that it wouldn't last long as an ordinary piece I must have been watching a repeat but do any members know if this was followed up? Very interesting. I'm thinking of investing in gold (in a very small way). Do the forum members think that this is a good time to do this? I would appreciate your advice. Peter

I was gardening yesterday & found a 1912 penny. Judging by the patination and corrosion I guess that it may have been dropped when the house was built in the 1930s. It is of no value but it is nice as a link with the past. I remember finding a half crown in the garden of my parent's house twenty years ago. I wonder what other forum users have found? Peter

Last weekend I went mudlarking on the Thames foreshore with my brother By mudlarking I mean poking about to see what can be found at low tide I have a favourite spot near Rotherhithe which is about a mile downstream from Tower Bridge. The interesting fact is that you can often find coins on the surface but there is so much other stuff there that good eyesight is needed to spot them. We were joined by someone who had been watching from the bank and he came up with the best find - a 1853 sixpence. It was rather worn and a little bent but it really made his day! I didn't find any coins myself but picked up an ARP (Air Raid Precaution) wardens button. There was lots of the usual clay pipe and pottery to see, and tons of old ships nails. I have yet to find anything really exiting at this spot (the oldest coin so far was a rather worn 1773 halfpenny) but next time- who knows! Peter
