1852 Farthing

Hi all

Just noticed a possible overstrike on a 1852 farthing

If you look at the E in REG is has a double strike on E or Over an F

Whats your thoughts on this as i cannot find it listed

It could be, but I think its more likely to just have the E readjusted a bit.

I have a couple of 1852s which have the same overstrike as well , does your coin have unbarred A's in BRITANNIAR as well.

Does anyone have an example with a "perfect" REG?

yep unbarred A as well but also BRITTANIAR . no colon although loos like it has been a weak strike there

Can you have a look at your 1852's again as mine also has on BRITTANIAR the BR are doubled as well, kind of like as it it was missed. Gonna try scanning it later and if i can get a decent piccy will post here.

All the farthings of 1875 - 1878 have forked tails James ( I have no idea why) interestingly the Heaton minted issues of this period do not have the forked tail.

I've always assumed that the different shaped letters were a result of the mint or mints purchasing letter punches from different sources. The fact that Heatons do not have this variation found on the Tower mint pieces lends credence to this theory. I have always assumed that they would be bought in items, but even if they made the letter punches in house, there would still be a number of individuals working in this area, so individual characteristic flourishes should be identifiable

Typical the some of the only coins missing for me are 1875 and 1877 i have the H ones lol
