    Oh excellent - thanks.

    Glad to help....

An error that is simple to make, inasmuch as the H & J key are adjacent to each other on the keyboard.....

Spell checkers are good to a degree, but you still can't beat old fashioned proof reading for the finer details... And a knowledge of the subject at hand.....

I was having a look over Ian Dracott's halfpenny articles again recently and I saw in part III that he listed a 12+H# halfpenny for 1875. I suspect this is an error as there is no H# reverse listed in his previous articles.

Does anyone know what it should be for sure? I suspect it should be J# but have nothing other than gut feeling to back that up.

I had made that correction to J# in my collection and notes after checking with him....... and confirming that H was only used in 1862...

  3. Without examining the coin firsthand, I can certainly see why you would think it was a 1698. I thought the same upon looking at the image.

Suggestions that the apparent 8 is a 6 over a higher 6, a 6 over upside down 6, etc. all bear merit. However, barring the discovery of a significantly  higher grade example to study, it is all speculation and conjecture, and the truth may never be known conclusively.

All that being said, it DOES look like an 8.

Some references list two varieties of the "A" to the left of the lighthouse. The F289A (smaller A) and the F290A (Larger A). Freeman only lists the 290A and also lists it as unbarred. My example is the larger "A" closer to the rim, and is unbarred (F290A). I think Gary's example is a smaller "A" and is closer to the LH. I do not know if Gary's example is barred or not. Here is my example.

I have 2 with the A on the left of the lighthouse.  One is closer to the rim, the other closer to the lighthouse...

That's a tongue in cheek nothing wrong. Having listed what is wrong with them, it is somewhat contradictory to then say they are good.

I took it to mean, as others have in the past, merely that aside from from it being a fake, that there was still an intrinsic (albeit debased) gold value to the piece as it was not made from some base metal.

I did not presume it to mean that it was acceptable to use in place of a genuine coin in a collection.....

To be honest, I can't see that negative feedback is justified there:

    1. Is it genuine? Yes, it would seem so.

    2. Is what you received the coin pictured on the listing? Yes it is, so no issue there.

    3. Is his description misleading or wrong? Not really - he did not assign a formal grade. "Very High Grade" is entirely subjective and not far out. Very Fine also contains the "very" word. I would give a solid GVF to the reverse but only VF to the obverse - which is typical with Victorian silver. His pictures look OK to me - I can't see he was hiding anything there.

    4. Was the price fair? Probably a bit high, but you chose to pay it.

Negative feedback is a big deal for regular sellers, so I would save it for a really bad listing. If you are really unhappy with it, ask to return it for a refund, don't hit him with a negative out of the blue.

    Well stated and wisely.......

    I concur completely. ....

Hi, so I have an enquiry about coin storage. I currently house my collection in lighthouse self adhesive coin holders, laid down flat in coin trays. However I have noticed that after a year or two some coins have toned quickly or unevenly, often just on one side like. I’ve heard these holders are good for longer term storage - at least for a few years anyway - so i wondered why this was and if there is anything I am doing wrong? And tips for alternative storage as I cannot risk the rest of my collection going the same way. Thanks.

It could possibly be something in the adhesive.

The cardboard 2x2's that I use (when I do use them), are those that are sealed with staples. The caveat with those are that you have to be careful not to staple the coin.... or damage the coin with the stapler, etc......

SO, I LITERALLY, TOTALLY, ABSOLUTELY agree with all of the above peeves..... THERE (THEIR ) all so AWESOME....

    YOUR AWESOME.... For mentioning them....

    That's BASICALLY it....

    [Written tongue in cheek]

PS : Let us not forget other annoying misuses :

    you're/your

    they're/there/their

    two/to/too

    weather/whether

use of "OF" instead of "HAVE" ("I should of" instead of "I should have")

overuse of the word "BASICALLY "

    absolutely

    seriously

    OMG!!

Overuse of "YOU KNOW" in conversation

I'm sure there are more, but that is all I can think of at the moment...

Admittedly, some can be attributed to spell or grammar checking ( or lack of it), or just simple mistyping..  (big fingers, small keyboar d - happens to me all the time)

Thank you I thought it would be a bit different from the normal ones around and a bit of fun. Will have to change it from time to time, just to keep you on your toes.
