    New Coin Book

Ordered a copy through Amazon, I did not realize I could have purchased it direct. It’s now sitting on my desk waiting for the weekend to peruse it fully.

    Greetings from a newbie

I have just started to upload my coins on Omnicoin and have a long way to go, but it's simple enough. I've up loaded 50 coins so far with another 350+ to go. Welcome to the board Jay
  4. Are you saying our National team is falling to bits.

    Collectors Coins GB 2011

Sorry to hear that Chris but somethings have to come before coins. Just let me know when your firing on all cylinders again and good luck with the move and may all your commitments be small ones.
  6. Well, from my memory of history lessons at school (which were a long time ago) I had never heard of Leopards mentioned in our Royal Arms flag, it was a bog standard comprehensive school I might add. Who said that collecting coins was a hobby of Kings (I wonder if the Kings new the answer to my question). I apologise to P. Alan Rayner and how dare I question such a noble book of English silver coinage. Seriously though it was a genuine question and my eyes have been opened yet again. Thank you all. No mention of it here either. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Arms_of_England

  9. I think I will make a note of this as I should be going London in the summer. I am sure the wife will love the little detour
  10. I can upload some of mine if you like Mark - some of the fields won't mean much to you as they refer to other bits of the database but if you're interested I can talk you through it. Yes please, I'd love to see them. Mark, try as I might, and ZIP as I might, I can't anything useful down to the 150k upload limit. 12. I also can confirm that the coins I have purchased from you Chris have all been graded accurately. There's nothing worse than purchasing coins and when you receive them feeling dissapointed at there grading. Thats why now I purchase from 3 or 4 main suppliers. There you are Chris, your trumpets grown a little more
  13. So, after all the coins that have been mentioned above what is the answer to the original question. "what is the rarest coin in a pocket of change"
  14. It would be nice if any of you could upload some sample spreadsheets for us to have a look at. To give us an idea or improve on our current spreadsheets.

    Collection on EBAY

It's a shame that you have to sell them but I am sure things will get better at some point and you will be able to start again with your collection.
  16. I have my copy now, good layout as usual.

    Books about Coins

I recently purchased 'A Basic Guide to Buying and Selling Coins' by Michael Freeman published in 1983. It's not a bad read even though it’s a bit dated now. Another one I purchased at the beginning of the year is ‘An Advanced Guide to Coin Collecting’ by Howard Linecar published in 1970.

    New arrival saying hi.

    Welcome
  21. Can anyone supply me with a complete list of the variety’s of farthings. On the Aboutfarthings web site they say 138 dates with 414 varieties to collect. I have checked the CCGB and they list about 183 varieties. This little coin has recently captured my imagination and I would like to find out as much as possible about this coin.
  22. Thanks Colin I took all of the variety data from your website and input it into a spreadsheet for my quick reference, I hope you don’t mind. I didn’t realise your website was so detailed with so much information, it’s a credit to you.

    Grading

But they do say that copper prices in UNC are for examples with full lustre, so that covers BU. cf. p.446 in the 2009 tome. I never spotted that . But to get me out of the hole I have just dug why do other books state different prices for Unc and BU coins. On another note how can you determine a correct price for a coin with say 25%, 50%, nearly full lustre, or is this left to the seller’s opinion. What I am trying to say is I AM CONFUSED, when I look at one of my coins and one is brighter that the other how do I put a value on the coin when no book can specify this in detail. I think this can lead to confusion for the collector, especially for someone new to the hobby. Forgive me for being a bit thick, but this is the only part of coin collecting that I am not confidant about (grading). I have the 'Standard Guide to Grading British Coins' but to this extent I am still none the wiser. I suppose it’s like buying a car, to the seller the car can look in great condition but to the purchaser it can look ok, until the time you want to sell the car after you have purchased it. Mark

    Grading

With all this confusion do you think thats why the 'Coins of England and the United Kingdom' only grade as high as Unc, apart from FDC (not even BU) when valuing coins in their books?
