The collotype images used up to the mid 1920s were much higher quality than the subsequent images. It is quite possible to see minute specks of wax on images which helps to confirm or disprove a provenance. The problem was the cost of a catalogue. The Bruun catalogue for the sale in 1925 (142 pages and 24 plates) cost a guinea! That's a huge cost when put into context - e.g. lot 128 sold for £1 and comprised 4 Aethelred short cross pennies in VF (2 Norwich and 2 Salisbury). The price had escalated from 2s6d pre-WW1 for a similar size volume.

This handwritten calculation was entered in the sale catalogue along with names of buyers.

Cost of printing was not insignificant

  2. I'm trawling through American auction catalogues to find the provenance of a Cromwell coin I own and came across, "Ralph Barker's Collection dd 1904". I was stunned to see full-colour plates in such an early catalogue, beautiful quality. The Newark siege half-crown looks particularly identifiable with the red wax identifiers, unless NGC have 'conserved' it that is.😂

I agree. Unless you can find some way of keeping the camera motionless in the ideal position, then there isn't really a massive gain from it. To be honest I was thinking that as I watched it for the first time. I suppose it might prove useful if you did need to demonstrate a specific point. But other than that, it's probably more heat than light.

Nonetheless, at least it can be done via you tube, and it's also possible to upload a much longer video, if needs be. Although I won't be doing so as there's nothing to show.

Mike, you could mount your phone on a stand and use a remote control to avoid motion. This one mentions control of the camera for photographs but I would think that video control should be possible.

I see that Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, is now questioning whether Jesus, the son of God, should no longer be viewed as White.

From the figures above, one can only conclude that if there was a God, he is both White and vindictive.

And hypocritical, in begetting a son of colour, if Justin were right.

Surely we should be told the truth?

Like many species, humans are territorial and aggressively defend their Tribe and their patch. There is no God.

But Covid 19 is made in his image.

Welby is gullible enough to believe in the immaculate conception (by accepting that Jesus is the son of God) so why does his naive credulity not extend to the more plausible notion of Jesus being born white? Surely, to an intelligent mind, a genetic malfunction is more plausible than believing that Mary was impregnated by an intangible entity.

Of course, Jesus, being a Nazarene, is more likely to have had a dark skin, that is obvious,  but then one would think that Welby would do better not to pander to the lowest common denominator but address the more important question of how did he get here in the first place.

To quote Mr. Hitchens “What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence”

  5. I was contemplating bidding on this on Ebay as an F/E but then decided it was a filled die, what do you think? It went for £50 with 23 bids so I suppose others might have thought likewise.

  6. Adulterous desires being compared to false coining, whatever next? - a false coyner in natures mint.

Who'd have thought our humble coins conjured up so much sexual imagery in bygone days.

    Love it.

  7.

Ebay, it's not ALL that bad, is it?

Let's post some coins that we're happy we picked up on that much-maligned den of iniquity.

    I'll start.

I picked up this Cromwell shilling in 2002 and I was very pleased with it at the time. I think it has been lightly cleaned at some time but is re-toning nicely. Prooflike fields.

It wasn't a bargain, in fact, double EF book at the time😲. My inexperience led me into an adrenaline-fuelled bidding war.

I think you need to know what you're doing with the shark infested waters of e bay. If you are cautious and know your subject (usually your specialist hobby area), then there are bargains to be had. I've been fortunate enough to bag a number of them over the years. Generally speaking they are cheaper than many dealers, although I appreciate some dealers combine their own website with e bay sales.

The very rare and/or very high quality stuff you see at auction, but that comes with the additional cost.

I agree, what about an 'Ebay's BEST Offerings' Topic, where we all share our doozies and say what a great selling site it can be?
