Guest welshguy_I'm_a_Guest Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 New to this, never used a forum before.......I have a coin of Aethelred ll..Penny. First Hand type. Lincoln mint. Moneyer is Faerthen.Coin was found in South Wales....Is unclipped with a perfect flan and I am told that it is better than VF.However, though the head side of the coin is well know, the reverse side of the coin is from a previouslyunrecorded die.....(National Museum of Wales)I would like to know the best place to get a valuation.Coin is very like Spink 2004. Sylvester Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 That's not an easy one, unrecorded varities exist for many hammered coins all of which vary greatly in price from each other. Some types fetch little extra (or no extra) premium than a normal variant. In other cases they can fetch considerably more. The problem here is demand, how much demand would there be for the coin? Well Æthelred II pennies are not uncommon so there's loads to choose from and loads of unrecorded examples. Now to an Æthelred II specialist it may be of some value.I can't say at all with regards to this, but i'd probably contact Spink and ask for their opinion on the coin. Quote
welshguy Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 Thank you Sylvester for the response.......Will follow it up as suggested.I can send scans if anyone wants to see the coin.I found the coin with a metal detector on farm land - Details of the coin have been recorded at the NationalMuseum of Wales. (Not many Saxon coins turn up in Wales)I am trying to get some idea of the value for the landowner, so we can come to a decision as what to do with it. Quote
welshguy Posted October 8, 2004 Posted October 8, 2004 Sorry Scans are large...Got to get the hang of that. Quote
