is this a coin mould? any info would be great!

i have found this detecting here in england, and i am just asking what people think before making a fool of myself at the museum!! does anyone have a clue is it a coin mould ? i have seen something exactly like it on the net but i cant seem to make out any detailing on it so if its a mould its very worn?

The correct term would be a die.

There isn't a lot of detail unfortunately. It could be a die, but I'm not sure. Exactly where was it found? There are records of where old mints were.

why thanks for a quick response Chris, i have seen these on a site (posted address) http://esty.ancients.info/numis/molds.html and the one i have is exactly like it!if you look at the pic the little slit at the bottom was where the molten metal was poured in! the other side has a coin shape too but its a different size! on the site i found the pics on they say that there would be a stack of these all bound together, well i just want someone to say yeah it certainly looks like its the same and then i shall take it along to the museum. i live near Colchester by the way! thanks! what say you?

Oh I see, yes forgers use moulds to make inferior quality cast coins, I suppose that may well be what it is. You'll have to let us know in here what the museum say. I hope it doesn't turn out to be some part of a plumbers kit or something modern!
