Guest Roger Hembury Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Hi I am currently sorting through my wifes coin collection and have come across 3 Victorian coins which are very very small, they are even smaller than the old decimal half penny we used to have. The coins values are penny, quarter farthing and half penny. They are dated 1848 and all have the word "model" on them.I have ever seen coins this small or having the word model on them and was wondering, as I know nothing about coins if anyone here can enlighten me about these coins. Thanks in advance. Master Jmd Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 It is a 'toy' piece, probably a laurel...(?) Quote
Chris Perkins Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 At first I thought:They sound like the Joseph Moore model coins. Struck as an idea in the quest to reduce the size of the coins without reducing the intrinsic value. None were official, but they were made in large numbers and do seem to have seen circulation. But if they are very very tiny, then JMD is probably right. Someone point Roger to the recent similar topic on toy money... Quote
Guest Roger Hembury Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Thanks for the very quick replies. How could I tell if its a Joseph Moore or a "toy" piece. Are they worth anything? Thanks again Quote
Master Jmd Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 I believe that the laurel examples have 'LAUREL' somewhere around the date...But as chris said, they are normally smaler than the real thing... Quote
Chris Perkins Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Do you mean Lauer JMD? (The maker in Nuremberg)The toy type are really ridiculously tiny and are usually dated 1848, so I suspect that's what you have. Quote
Master Jmd Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Do you mean Lauer JMD? (The maker in Nuremberg) Easy mistake Quote

Guest Roger Hembury Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Sorry to be a pain, but none of the coins have Lauer or Laurel on them. After reading your posts I suspect that they are worthless "toys" but I have scanned them (with a 1p piece so that you can see the size) and loaded them on a website - http://www.rogerhembury.co.uk/coins.htm for you have a look at just to make sure. Sorry about the size of the images - first time I have scanned coins.Slightly off topic - is the register link working? I keep getting a page not found error whenever I try to register.May thanks to all of those who had a look at the coins / helping me out. I may be back if I find any other odd coins in the collection!.RegardsRoger Quote
Chris Perkins Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Yes, those are toys. They may not be completely worthless, but you may have trouble finding enough interest in them to be able to sell them for more than pennies.I loged out, then tried to register, it was fine.
