Guest richbedforduk Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Evening All,I have just got to Victoria Sixpences, and the first one has left me confused. I have no other 1844's to compare. Is this date a bit squiffy? I know that a large '44' is listed, and this doesn't look large, just squiffy. Quote
SionGilbey Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 The date on most are "squiffy". The squiffiness seems normal enough. Quote
Nick Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 All of the early (pre 1870 ?) Victorian dates are 'squiffy' to a certain degree. I believe that the 18 of the date comes from the 'master' and the other digits were punched into each die by hand. Hence the variation.Your picture is not a large 44 (see attached), it is a normal one. Quote
declanwmagee Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 still looks like a jolly nice coin though Quote
