Threepence/Maudy.... Which is it?

After a very successful reply about a previos query i was wondering if people could helpl me on another....

I know this is probably basic level stuff that people have answered 100's of times before, but is there any definite was of telling the difference between a standard threepence, and a maundy 3 pence.

I would take it the 1, 2 & 4 are fairly easy as there doesn't seem to be many around for standard circulation, but the 2 pence has me flummoxed!!!

Any tips on spotting maundy 3d's???

Gist of it is... how does one go about distinguishing differences in 3d & maundy 3d Coins??

There's no easy way and it's generally impossible with coins less than EF. The maundy threepences are prooflike, have mirror-like fields and are often darkly toned. In saying that, some of the circulation non maundy threepences can also be quite prooflike and darkly toned so even coin dealers have to sometimes make an instictive educated guess.

No picture of 3 pence to compare maybe in the future in every year and also the maundy.

on the cross on top of the crown.

Is the base of the cross is round or rectangular?

others may have well struck and more detailed,its nice to have picture to compare the maundy and 3 pence found in circulation.
