Protecting Ancient Gold Coins?

Hi everyone,

What does one recommend to protect Roman Gold Soldius, would the Capsules be sufficent (the 21mm or 21.5mm ones) or would the 2 x 2's be more suited.

Would any of them damage the coins under normal use?

Both would be suitable, but I personally think that special coins look far better in capsules than in 2x2's.

However as Gold Solidus are quite thin compared to modern gold coins, do you think they will get damaged in a capsule (as they can move up or down easier)?

That's true, but I would think that unless you intend to violently shake them frequently, that despite the room, it would be very unlikely that they could move with enough force to damage themselves.

Do you want me to send you a 22.5mm capsule (I have some out of a box) and a 25mm 2x2 for experimental purposes?

Thanks for the offer Chris, but i have just uncovered some 20.5mm capsules while looking through my safe.

I any case the 22.5mm capsules would be to big for the coins, i dont mind so much the coins moving up or down, but i would mind if there was sufficent room for them to move 'side to side'.

BTW do you know if the chemical makeup of the capsules if compatable with ancient coins, as they are with modern coins (ie acid free and such).

I don't know the exact chemical make up, but I am assured they are free of the nasty plastics that damage metals, and are neutral.
