Hi all,

I was just wondering if you could help me identify the following coin?

It is 41mm diameter. I apologise for posting here if the coin isn't British

Thanks in advance

It isn't British, so I'll move it.

Do a search on google for Maria Theresa Thaler and you'll find all you need.

I don't want it, so you can do what you like with it!

My remark wasn't meant to be either, either. Simply the truth in a jokey way.

The eBay message is part of my signature, so everyone sees it, it wasn't really directed at you personally.

It's a Maria Theresa Thaler restrike. They are extremely common and worth roughly silver bullion value.

The Maria Theresa Thaler restrikes were a very popular trade coin, especially in the Middle East. This coin was the source for the design of the Eritrean Tallero, which was issued in 1918 by the Italians. The Tallero (derived from 'Thaler') circulated in Eritrea as a 5 Lire coin.

There is actually a book that lists the ways to identify which mint struck which restrikes. They were even struck at the Royal Mint on Tower Hill,London during World War II for issue in Ethiopia & Somaliland. The restrikes are now being struck exclusively at the Austrian State Mint,Vienna.

Aidan.
