markxero Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 Can anyone help identify this coin? I originally assumed it was British as it has Victoria's portrait on it, but it may be German. It appears to be gold, but is tiny - only 9 or 10mm in diameter. The reverse has DIAMOND JUBILEE 1897 and NÜRNBERG on it, while the obverse says IM:OF 2 SOVGN:E:CHR:LAUER with Victoria's portrait.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Pics:ObverseReverse Quote
Geoff T Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 This is a toy coin - in this case a sovereign - made by the firm of Lauer in Nuremberg. They are reasonably common.Geoff Quote
markxero Posted February 27, 2006 Author Posted February 27, 2006 Thanks Geoff. At least I can tell my father-in-law it isn't worth very much now. Quote
krasnaya_vityaz Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 One of those rare instances where a token commemorating a British monarch and event was minted in Germany. It cannot be construed as too unusual though, for Wilhelm II was Victoria's grandson. At that time most of civilised Europe's monarchies were related to or descended from Victoria. Quote
