question about a 1928 British West African penny

I am merely curious about the existance of a six pointed star on the reverse side of the coin. does anyone know why it is there? what it means? any information (or simply directions as to where I could obtain this information) would be greatly appreciated.

That's the design alright... it was used on all the lower denominations.

All I could think of was that the coins were current in several states... Nigeria, Gold Coast, Sierra Leone etc... maybe it somehow represents them? That's just a guess though...

There are indeed 6 member states in British West Africa

There may also be a link to the Muslim heritage of the region, as the Seal of Solomon is a prominent ornament in Muslim art and culture.
