Afternoon Gents,

Why isit that alot of the early proofs have die issues. Regarding to alot of the William crowns / halfcrowns. Would there not have been special care taken on these specimen pieces?

I have a possible explanation but could be wrong !

Many early proofs were struck in very low numbers so were produced on a hand press. I believe that they were pressed more than once, sometimes causing a doubling of the strike. In the USA I believe such coins are described as double dies.
