Guest Peter_I'm_a_Guest Posted January 21, 2005 Posted January 21, 2005 Experts: your advice please.I was talking to one of my colleages here at work & he mentioned that he had some of his late fathers coins.Apparently he worked in a mint & had some coins from an African state which were withdrawn before they got issued ( the 'leader' was deposed!). I was wondering if there would be any value in these? I have tried to 'tease' more information from him i.e. which country, face value, dates, condition and just how many there are etc but no luck so far!!! As my colleage is 50 years old I would guess that they would be from the 70s or 80s.I know that this is not much to go on & if you guys think that it is not pursuing I will take it no further! Thanks,Peter. mint_mark Posted January 22, 2005 Posted January 22, 2005 OK, it took me a few moments to remember, but there is a whole series of coins from Mozambique issued in 1975 that have very high catalogue values. It was the coinage of the people's republic (socialist government) which was in power for only six months between independence from Portugal and the formation of a proper republic. If it's not these your colleague has then I expect there are similar stories for other countries... quite a few of the "last colonial" or "first after independence" issues can be scarce. Some the last colonial issues of Rhodesia and Nyasaland have high values too... Quote
