Guest CASARNBIL Posted December 17, 2004 Posted December 17, 2004 Hi there - I have a Henry VII Half Groat (Canterbury Mint) which instead of reading "CIVI TAS CAN TOR" actually reads "CIVI TAS CAN TAS". It looks to be some kind of error - can anyone help on this ? Does it make the coin more collectable ? Any comments would be gratefully received. Quote
Sylvester Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Sorry for the delay in reply.Looks like an error to me, probably a die engraver getting ahead of himself, or losing concentration.I should think coins of this period are susceptible to errors. I know alot of Edward I pennies are littered with errors like two A's or something similar, same with groats.Dunno it might fetch a bit more, but hammered is such a varied field that these kinda things can turn up in all shapes, sizes and forms.I'll have a look in one of my books later to see if i can find any specific references.
