Dear all

I hope someone can help me say whether this coin is fake or genuine. It is (or so it states) an old Straits Settlement 1/4 cent copper coin. The front has the words "George V" "King" and "Emperor" while the back has "Straits Settlement" "1801" and "1/4 cents". The reason I question its authenticity is the fact that as far as I know King George V was only born in 1865 (64 years AFTER the coin is dated). I found this coin in the earth about 20 years ago while digging so I doubt it's a recent forgery (if it is at all). Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

For a scanned picture I've put it up here and the filename is 1801.jpg.

At the same site I have a couple of other Straits Settlement pieces. One is dated 1940 and the other 1957 (the date of Malaysia's independence). Are these possibly worth anything or are they relatively common?

Finally I would just like to apologise if I am posting this in the wrong section of the forum as I was unsure whether Straits Settlement coins constitute what is defined as British coins. Once again thanks for any help.

That's a fake, and not even a very convincing one. Perhaps it was intended to be used as something else, tourist piece, keepsake or whatever.

Dear Sir

I guess it was too good to be true, what with it being found the way it was. Ah well, here's dreaming that I find some other treasure in the future. Many thanks to you for clarifying things for me.

Best regards.
