Edward VIII crown - 3 kings of 1936

Hello everybody,

In 1990 I inherited a set of 3 crowns titled "The 3 crowns of 1936" which is in a red leather case. It belonged to my grandfather is comprises 3 uncirculated crowns of:

George V

Edward VIII

George VI

along with a card about the set.

I've recently begun wondering about their value and found very few references to Edward VIII coins. Until this morning when I found some claims of up to £100,000...

My question, am I sitting on an unfound fortune or am I being led astray?

Without wanting to sound dumb, can someone suggest where I go next?

Thanks.

Dear Dave,

I'll answer your query in here, instead of over email.

I would be 99.9% sure that what you have is a modern novelty set of Crowns. Often referred to as 'Fantasy'. The Royal Mint never made a 1936 Edward VIII Crown or a 1936 George V Crown, and the fact that you have them must mean they are modern repros.

1937 Edward VIII Crowns may exist in patten form probably in the British Museum or Royal Mint collection, but the only 1936 Crown was the George V wreath type.

Closer inspection and calling round the family has answered a few questions;

They are NOT crowns, but they ARE from 1936.

They're a commemorative souvenir set of bronze coin/medals. Technically not coins but not medals either.

Never seen anything similar so no idea about value.

If these are medals, then it's very unlikely that they date from 1936. George VI only succeeded Edward VIII in December so it stands to reason that any commemorative triptych of medals could not be issued realistically before 1937. However, I am aware of a set which was issued (unofficially) around that time in a presentation case. What you have could be these or a modern. Franklin Mint-style, commemorative set.

Do you have a picture?

I'll take a picture over the weekend. I know these were from that general period 1936/7 as my grandfather bought them when he worked in London at the time.
