I've been reading with interest all the responses to my original query and it appears things are not as simple as I hoped. "It has been suggested that the mintage figures supplied by the RM " "The published figures before 1953 are for coins minted in a given year" Above are two extracts from posts. Minted figures supplied by RM and published figures are these one and the same? If so where can I access the figures supplied by RM?

Well it looks like this is a whole can of worms. What information does RM hold? What was their policy? What figures do they have if any? Why are they so secretive? I wonder what effect an application under the Freedom of Information Act would have especially if they came from leading dealers? Failing that how about a load coming from opur members.

I've seen this before. Are the year figures minted or delivered. Surely RM should know. If the difference is significant wouldn't be in everyones interest for the big dealers to put the screws on and get an answer.

Thank you for your attention and opinion. I'm looking at ESC page 250 and the fourth illustration on the bottom. That is where I got the 6 over 5. I don't think I can post the image due to copyright. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Just acquired a Lima sixpence and a copy of ESC. Checked the date on the coin and the ESC seemed to indicate 6 over 5. ESC1758 The obverse is C1 GEORGIUS with a U. This is ESC1756 I'm confused. If it is 6 over 5 does that mean the original coin was 1745 and if so shouldn't the obverse be ESC1756 and not as in the book 1758. Any help appreciated. I include two images of the coin.

Thanks for your response. If I got the shield dead vertical looks like my coin is a bit out as my photo shows.

I successfully aligned the shield vertically in a holder. The photograph shows the resultant position of the head. Question now, is that as it should be. How do you know the correct position for the portrait.

Thanks for your response. Alignment using the shield is possible but how do you check if the portrait is 180 degrees relative to that. I've only got one shieldback so can't make comparison. Seems a bit hit and miss and how about a coin with no obvious markers. I've used the shield as you suggested. The head shown is the result. Should the date be more horizontal?

Thanks for your response. The despatch date on the despatch note is 18/1/2011. The serial number is L08070353. As to value do you know of any sales other than the one mentioned in this topic?

I understand this sovereign to be coin alignment. When I position the head to be what I consider to be upright the shield back seems to be greater than 180 degrees out. My question is how do I know I have positioned the head correctly upright. I positioned the date to appear horizontal. Is it possible the dies are out of alignment. What is the procedure to get an exact measurement?

I've just joined the forum and read with interest the details of this coin. I bought 6 sets of the olympic 50s from the Mint in 2011. One contained the aquatic error. At the beginning of this year I sent photographs and a history of the coin to two auction houses. One said under £10 the other £50 because "we sell to collectors who know how much these coins are worth rather than the overinflated prices that appear on eBay." I've attached a photograph and as you can see it is in its original sealed bag. I note a catalogue valuation of £1000 is this for one still sealed in the bag? I'd be grateful for any comments and probable valuations.
