  1. OK my friends have resolved it. Alexander III first coinage penny , maybe class 7 .the legend is reversed Walter on Ber(wick) info.... Retrograde coins are those with inscriptions, often the reverse legend, that are written backward or mirrored, making the text read from right to left instead of left to right. This feature is considered an interesting numismatic rarity and is sometimes found on coins from various periods and regions, such as ancient Greece, medieval England, and Scotland. Retrograde" in this context likely refers to coins with the text appearing backwards or reversed on the reverse (or "tails") side of the coin. Alexander III, the King of Scots, reigned from 1249 to 1286 and his coinage, including sterling coins, featured various mints and styles. Some of these coins, particularly those from the Berwick mint, have legends (the inscription on the coin) that were printed in a retrograde style.
  2. I contacted Dr Allen and it's out of his scope for recording i do have someone else looking at it, any information appreciated.

  6. Thank you i was just googling my old coin and this thread showed up, I am always finding something but nothing as rare as the Stephan penny, a nice little Alexander showed up Saturday.
  7. Thank you I never got round to asking him about the write up something i must do ASAP, i will update the group once he gets back to me.
  8. It was back up for sale a few years ago someone claiming it had been repaired rest assured it had nothing done to it while i had it, then again a bit later on the images wasn't clear but it looked cracked :-(.
  9. I turned down 9k from a member here it was worth what someone is prepared to pay as mentioned 7k in the end i had no fees to pay, i have no regrets it had to go to auction for my own piece of mind.
  10. Hi john, thank you, no I will not be going down but I will watch it online, it will be a shame for it to go but I have my memories and needs must, I am sure it will go to a good home and it will be interesting to see Martin allen's write up unfold. Regards Lee

  22. Thanks rob, but after doing lots of research on this it was not set in stone by the mint mark it was a maybe my coin is the only clear evidence of a Stephan coin minted at tutbury and the only one recorded :-).
  23. Hi could anyone please give me any more information on this coin please i can find one with two annulates in two quarters but not all four like this on has, sorry about the poor pictures after seeing some great photography ive seen here.

Lol coinery, i love hammered coins and willing and trying to learn about them, i find a fair few of hammered coins each year and they all fascinate me in any condition, this is a special find for me and i want to know everything about it, maybe one day i will know what i am talking about but i have a long long way to go :-(. @ rob thank you yes that's what i meant maybe two ?
  25. Hi rob, thanks for the information, I would love to see a picture of it if you do find it please, also on my coin they appears to be a crescent moon on the obverse above his head, or am i seeing things thanks for any information.
