  1. Wouldn't it be useful if there was a facility on eBay to report that an item was fake? Oh wait... I told them it was fake on five occasions but they insisted I send it back to the person who sold it to me. I think the seller had to promise ebay that they would destroy it ... I just saw a pig fly !!!
  2. There are two well known varieties, Spink 3938 and 3938A. Not sure if you are referring to these. The easiet way to recognise the scarcer one is the longer border teeth on the reverse. Spink 3938 refers to Half Crowns and not to Crowns (unless I'm mistaken). Crowns are 3937 so don't seem to be recognised as having varieties.
  3. I have a 1894 Crown which appears to have LVI on the edge - this isn't in the catalogue - is it genuine ?
  4. I've noticed that many 1845 Shillings have an inverted 1 in Victoria - Is this normal ?
  5. You need to get a couple of books, William. 1) Collectors Coins GB, about £7 by our glorious leader, Chris Perkins 2) Grading British Coins, £13 by one of our favourite forum members, Derek Allen both available here, probably the best £20 you could spend. Same price as fish and chips for 4. You'll be glad you did! Has it got an inverted 1 in Victoria - my bet is that it has !
  6. Has anyone else noticed that there are two varieties of this coin ? One (the scarcer one) has the 9 and 6 separated by a larger space than the other one. Not sure if this affects values.
  7. Can we seee some photos and descriptions of what to look for please? I'll 3rd that - we need to see pictures. It was verified as fake by CGS - their reference (or UIN) was 0019679. I've no chance of uploading a pic with maximum allowable file size of 150 K !! Never say never - here's a photo of the incompletely struck (or broken) rose.

  9. I bought a Counterfeit Wreath Crown from ebay recently and it was a scarily good forgery. It should have us all worried - I sent it off to a coin specialist who proved that it was a forgery. I then rang up Spink to let them know but they just said "we already know about the recent Wreath Crown Forgeries". PLEASE BEWARE OF THESE and the avalanche of other forgeries hitting the market. My advice is to specialise in one specific area and become and expert in those type of coins so that you can easily spot a forgery.
