  1. Hi Mitch, I'm from St Helens too! Welcome to the hobby & the forum. Can I interest you in Ancients? Not as expensive as you might think either. Enjoy, Dave
  2. Hi Geoff, I know absolutely nothing about Commemorative medals, but the Cromwell one sounds very interesting! Can you post a picture? Many thanks! Dave
  3. Just how many coins do you all have, and how do you store and display them? I'm guessing that some of the modern (to me the last 200 years is VERY modern!) collections must run into hundreds of coins? Dave
  4. I've got the 2004 edition of this, and thinking about buying the 40th Edition 2005. Is there much new in it, or should I save my cash? Thanks! Dave
  5. .... sold for £2,155! Still, its nothing compared to one coin in the recent Triton VIII sales - $240,000! Coin Dave
  6. Actually, there is another company based in the UK, Westair Reproductions Ltd, that I think also uses WRL Link
  7. I'm sorry about this, but I think you have a modern reproduction. WRL is a stamp used by Winter Reproductions Ltd to denote that the coin is one of there modern reproductions. If you have a picture it would help?
  8. Dear All, I just tonight won this coin on e-Bay: Antoninus Pius, AR denarius, Obverse: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P Laureate head right. Reverse: TEMPLVM DIVI AVG REST Temple of Divus Augustus and Livia, statues within. Is it me or does it look like Livia is mooning out of the Temple door? Dave
  9. Hi Geordie582, It does look nice. Can I ask what your picture is of? It looks a bit like a Cnut? I'm still a bit green and not got myself a picture yet, but I'm working on it! Dave
  10. Just spotted this on ebay, a little out of my budget, but what a coin! Offa 757-796 AD
  11. What is the feature Chris? Dave
  12. Sorry, not very old, the best I can do is: Leo Mildenberg - The Coinage of the Bar Kokhba War - 1984 I can do a little better on newest book: David Hendin - Not Kosher - 2005 (number 65 of the first edition!) Dave
  13. Are there any Ancients there? (and I don't mean the dealers!) Very Best to everyone, hope you all have a prosperous and enjoyable year! Dave
  14. ...the other one!
  15. Just about my only "English" coins! (They are listed in Coins of England, but are probably from the Rhine) Anglo-Saxon Silver Sceatta Porcupine, c. 695-740
  16. They are all lovely coins. I'm amazed at how different groups of coins look, these have fantastic front on faces, almost cheeky grins! I've never seen any of these in hand, what sort of size and weight are they? Dave
  17. Hi tubandpud, The vast majority of coins are 'gobledy gook' to me too! What do you collect? There is quite a nice Sceatta Porcupine Type on ebay:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...3948207491&rd=1 I'll try and do a picture of mine at some point, but I would guess that there are better examples with other Forum members. Dave
  18. The relief is quite high, and its not the best photo (probably another Topic - if there isn't one already?), but the legend is not as crisp as some. Over all though, its a lovely coin in hand! (not bad for 1750 years old!) Dave
  19. Bought this a couple of weeks ago, Trebonianus Gallus AR Antoninianus. Gaius Vibius Trebonianus Gallus (251-253 A.D.) Short join rule with Hostilian who died from the plague. Gallus then ruled with his son Volusianus as co-emperor. Both killed by their troops. Obverse: IMP C C VIB TREB GALLVS P F AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right Reverse: SAECVLLVM NOVVM, Roma seated facing in hexstyle temple, two dots in ex. RIC 91 Hope the picture works, my first one! What do you think? Dave
  20. Which coin shows have you been to, and which do you recommend? I've been to Coinex in London, and would recommend it. A good mix of coins, including Ancients, and Spink and Coin News too. The only problem is it's the only one I've been to, so I have no reference points! Has anyone been to Numismata in Munich? Of all the places to go (apart from New York!) this was the one I was thinking of attending, but it's a long way to go to find out if it's not worth the trip! Dave
  21. Hi Sylvester, I could get interested in medieval coins, great cauldron of history bubbling over, and some nice coins too! What do you collect? I have a few earlier coins, Saxon Styca and Sceatta Porcupine Types, but only a few, and not the best. I was thinking about collecting really old pennies, but I already collect too much, and decided to wait a bit. Could you post a picture of your favourite coin? Dave
  22. I guess there are many reasons behind collecting coins, but mine was firstly a love of History. My first coin was a very cheap Antoninus Pius Denarius that cost me less that £10. It’s still one of my favourite coins, but in reality, nothing special, other than to me! Next came 100 uncleaned Roman coins, and the delights of uncovering history under the dirt. The thrill of seeing a coin that has not seen a human face for 1700+ years is quite something! After that I just bought anything and everything, just enjoying the thrill of a new coin in my hand. Slowly I realise that I couldn’t afford EVERYTHING and that I had better specialise in SOMETHING! I chose Biblical (history angle), Architectural (lots to go at and interesting to me) and Alexandrian Tetradrachms (Egyptian, Greek writing, Roman coins, Romano-Egyptian Gods etc. - And still fairly inexpensive. I still have designs on a 12 Caesars collection from Alexandria, but I think only 10 or so are available!). Nice link too, thanks! Dave
  23. Thanks for the warm welcome! Are there many ancient collectors here? I like to call myself a novice, been collecting for about a year and a half. If I have learned anything in that time, it’s that I will never know it all, so I'll probably remain a novice! I'm still spending more on books than coins, but the wants list for coins is now much larger than the wants list for books, although David Sear is supposed to be launching volume 3 of his Roman books in May, and Ivan Varbanov the first of 3 English Language books on Roman Provincials early next year. The only modern coins that have caught my eye so far are a couple of sets from Gibraltar, one on the labours of Hercules and the other the Seven Wonders of the World. Does anyone have them or seen them? Dave
  24. Hello to All! Just joined, interested mostly in Ancients, especially Biblical/Judean, Temple and Architectural reverses (mostly Roman Provincials) and Alexandrian Tetradrachm. Dave, UK
