well spotted Terry, got me looking at my three 1861 Gouby G's , the first from LCA and then cheap examples from Ebay and the Midland Coin Fair. To my mind the second coin could also be a 're-entered colon' example, though with a narrower colon in this case. What do you think?

yes , I agree your middle example looks just like my 1860 Gouby Vc coin pictured below,  but with the 1861 reverse .

I’ll have to check the first, and you don’t have the third. I’ll email you the images probably tomorrow.

Your picture is clearly ja

Many thanks Richard for confirming, even with the website and "The British Bronze Penny", this is one that still confuses me.

It is a 1874 with the description " j " and I thought it might be a "ja"

Very Best Regards

Yes, it’s a ja. Is it F72 or F78? The F72 ja variety seems rare in the higher grades - most are plain obverse j. All the F78 are ja and it is a fairly scarce coin .

Hi Jerry,

It was described as "1874, older head, small date, Fr. 72, Gouby dies K/j, about UNC, much lustre." Which would be F72

Here is the Obverse

Yes, I think I'll add it to my rare penny site - I'd appreciate anyone's photos, please.

Many thanks again Richard for confirming it was ja and if the photos are helpful, please do use them. It came with what I believe is an 1875 Gouby Lk (so normal penny variety for 1875) in the same condition.

Very Best Regards

Hi folks, I'm hoping for a few extra pairs of eyes in case I have a bit of confirmation bias going on. I believe this is a reverse F, but it is very worn!

I think that actually might be an F78, it has the narrower gap between the ribbons, the gap is wider on an F72. But one of the best that I’ve seen.

Do you agree Richard?

It could well be, though I am not sure that the rock to the lower left of the shield is present which would be diagnostic. Can you post both sides, these rare coins tend to have very few die pairings and digit spacing etc will help confirm the possibility?

It’s very definitely Reverse ja, else it would be Reverse nein.

Obverse is most definitely a Freeman 4. Coin is an 1861, so reverse options would be D, F and G. 99% sure its not a G. Unfortunately I think the area around the shield where a rock could be is just too far gone, hence the reliance on the domed lighthouse, thicker plume and number of teeth between the top of the lighthouse and bottom of the O
