I see it sold for $780 - I don't know whether that includes commission but still a lot for a circulation coin.

It appears to me that the 3rd party graders are being lax in their work !

It appears to me that the 3rd party graders are being lax in their work !

780 includes juice, but not shipping /insurance, or tax (which varies by state/city). The shipping fee alone is likely 20-35, and tax may add on an additional 5 to 10% (or none, in some areas). Getting close to 820-900, depending where one lives.  Bit spicy.

Why don't graders include the Peck or Freeman numbers ?

The main reason is and may be wrong is that they don’t know them , although will do but an extra charge.Problem with the only two big graders is they have done over 150 million coins worldwide of just about every denomination known and nobody knows everything about them all.I used to send quite a few to ngc some I had the Freeman number on but only occasionally as not cost effective intending to sell them in the near future and only had varieties done in high grade.

I notice the 1954 Penny is for Auction with Sovereign Rarities 19Th November £90-120,000.

Also a Silver proof Penny 1860 ,struck on a Heavy flan and another 8 or so ,all of which are rare.

On that note, I'd love to track down copies of the James Workman Penny Collection auction catalogues. That was all before my time of collecting.

 

Also, if there are print copies for this auction with Sovereign Rarities on 19th November, I hope I'm able to secure one. Bit tougher sometimes, across the pond.

Medal catalogue is online now. Some superb and rare examples, and in overall the estimates are very strong for all medals especially those more common ones.

Wow, I never knew Bernie was selling his penny collection. I remember his 'Wanted' ads in Coin News in the 90s. I also didn't know he was the owner of the 1954.

I suppose that was his capping specimen - the 1954. I wonder what it might fetch?? I also wonder about the 1922 specimen penny and how it night go price wise.

Nothing very interesting for you, just an 1866 penny that I found in a bag when I was about 12 (so almost 60 years ago). I remember finding it because it was the best Victoria Penny I ever found in my numerous 10/- (?) penny bag searches. When I found it it had been highly polished, but has mostly toned again now, although I assume that it can still be recognised as polished. I assume it was someone's lucky penny and it accidentally found its way back into circulation.

Anyone care to ID it variety-wise?

Nice find - beats any bun penny I found in 5/- penny bags (the best would have been 1890 1891 1892 in VG). I do remember switching to 3d and in the first bag I checked was a 1949!
