I would like an 1897 F148 as well, in a decent grade. I do have an 1856 OT, though not for sale. So I have signed up for the newsletter now. Thanks for mentioning it.

Freeman has them as R9, but I'd say they were scarcer than that.

Haven't seen many high grade F148's Mike, but a fair number of really low grade ones.

You mean opinion on the grade?

Yes, I've seen a few low grade ones as well, Ian. But very few above sub fine. They seem to be almost in the "hen's teeth" class at high grade.

Yes, grade please.

I'd say GEF Cliff. Especially nice crisp strike to the reverse.

Also, the tide line shows up really well. With many it's quite faint.

Thanks Cliff. I agree with Mike, GEF. Also that they are very difficult to find much above fine grade.

Quite an interesting 1880 with an obviously raised second 8, and the 0 pretty much touching the top of the exergue as well - link

Yes- quite interesting...I have an 1880 with '0' in the usual place, but with the top of this high  '0' still visible.

but not that high '8'.......

I was going to sell it privately but after speaking to a couple of penny experts / dealers they informed me due to its rarity and grade it was hard to determin a price and to put it in an Auction.

1858 large rose: £1850 - congrats!

I presume that's the best one you know.

Thank you Peter ,like most varieties you dont know what may be found in the future or what other collectors may have that are rare and not share with people.

Although it was a really nice one and may be a long time untill another turns up for sale that is UNC.

That's a great price and it's interesting that 2 bidders bid it up that high.

Wonder who bought it ? (KB ?)

I've spent the last couple of days reading through and date/page listing every article relating to pennies in the Coin Monthly magazines from November 1966 to December 1977, including author's name and article title. I've also included a reference to some relevant reader letters.

There are many ! Although there was somewhat of a famine in 1974 & 1975.

Any rate, although I've compiled this for my own reference, if anybody would like a copy, feel free to PM me with your e mail address and I'll happily forward it on. It's way too big to try and reproduce here.

More years from 1978 onwards as and when I get complete years.

Are you offering an index to the articles, or a copy of the actual articles Mike?

Ah, so it would depend on my having the issues in question?

Or knowing where they were if there was any you were interested in.

If someone was really stuck for getting access, or wanted a given article urgently (unlikely, but possible) I'd send them pics. But my photos are not brilliant.

Nice one! These wide 1889s are rare in any condition, and this one is ace! Can you post a pic of the obverse too?

Was it on eBay, or a dealer, or just a chance find?

Happy Christmas to you all!
