I Wanted To Say Hello

Hello my name is Geoff and I have recently joined this forum. I have been trying to find a forum that is British.

My problem is that I collect Isle of Man. Most places list as world not British, so am I ok here?

I also collect Irish, so again does not come in the British catagory.

I am a member of yhe Wiltshire Numismatic Society, joined again earlier this year. I was a member about 30 years ago then dropped out, and sold my collection but came back earlier this year.

Welcome aboard, we get all sorts of coinage on here, I'd say IoM and Irish Coinage is pretty close to home, and would be of interest to most on here! I was watching this eBay coin with interest 321278325585

Just out of interest, what is the earliest dated IoM coin?

Hi,

The earliest official coinage was 1709, before that it was mainly English and Irish. The last of the early dates was 1839.

There are a lot of varieties of some of the early dates as well as contempory forgeries, mainly Irish,

I wondered if you would be here. Yes Christmas was good. Did you see the cases in Lidi? £12.99 with 5 different inserts. They had a load in the one I went in last week, I bought one and at that price very good.

Welcome to the forums Geoff I only own one IOM coin, but it's a fascinating one - a rather worn 'cartwheel halfpenny' dated 1798 with the three legs of Man as the reverse motif instead of Britannia.

Yes, the 1813 coins were also cartwheel. The 1798 penny is a much more difficult to find especially in better grade, I have an EF held for me. Lot of money, but I prefer to go for the best grade I can. I have several 1/2d's of both 1798 and 1813.

I would happily upgrade my 1798 halfpenny (-> GVF or EF) as it's the only cartwheel halfpenny I would ever be able to afford.

OK, well, ABC coins has several with a VF priced at £20. About right. David also has 1813 1/2d.

Got it. Yes, there's a VF- for £25 with some unsightly edge knocks, and an F+ for £20. I'd prefer one a bit better, but thanks for the heads up, and I will think about whether to get the F+

Spinks book is a bit out of date, I agree needs a new one. The main book for IOM is called Isle of Man Coins and Tokens and the only place I found to get it on the island, was £30 but covers all including up to 2011. The 1733 varieties listed are however I am reliably informed not aall correct.

It is fine as far as it goes, but does not cover the varieties I have seen this book at silly prices, I think I paid about £7 for it. The coin News Yearbook lists the main issues too.
