Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately Bill Pugsley hasn't visited for a while. I've never used CGS but I'm sure you'll get a few useful responses from other members.

I can understand why you're frustrated, based on what you have said and on the photos, but feel I should point out that a 20p mule isn't a £5,000 - £6,000 coin (if that's what you meant), but worth around £40 - £60. This shouldn't make any difference to the service you receive, but it's important that you aren't mis-led about its value.

No sorry if that's how it reads. The value as is now £110. My point was it should not make a difference to customer service whether the coin is worth X amount, but they have missed out on my future dealings as it could of totalled to the £1000's.

If you want Bill to read your post it might be better to PM him you complete initial post as this will go to his email

Never happened though.

Well it appears that there is an NGC office right on My doorstep. If i pay 130 i get 5 free gradings which is much cheaper than PCGS Paris who want 69 membership and 45 a coin.

Anyone needing coins slabbed for the American market? :D

I have 5 Morgans of which i want maybe 3 of them slabbing because the 1878CC is a nice high grade and the 1881S PL (prooflike) for the American way of grading is also high grade, and from the NGC site an MS65 is valued at $2250 so it has to be worth my while.

Is that a serious offer. I've been looking to get my 1937 proof crown reslabbed as a one off. It originally came out of a PCGS slab but I guess an NGC slab would do the trick. :)

There is very little difference in terms of marketability between NGC & PCGS. And interesting comment by William Conroy in this LinkedIn discussion:

Very interesting read, I've saved this one down for future reference. Thanks Jaggy!

Thanks, let me know as obviously I would expect to pay all costs. I just don't want to go to the trouble of a membership just for one coin. I'm also looking to sell in the states if all goes well. The coin was originally a top pop PCGS PL67.

ive often considered using this company for grading but have never met anyone who has used them. i dont have many coins of massive value but have a few over £200 which is fairly expensive for me since ive just bought our first home and my fiancée doesnt have a full time job yet being at university. But i had hoped to send in my pride of my collection which are sierra leone company pieces the turnaround time is a little off-putting though.

im glad ive found this to read through. thanks !

If you want to grade PCGS it is in my opinion. This 1879 penny has problems with the shield and is weakly struck around the second N. Obverse lettering and parts of the date are faint in places, colour is bad and has carbon spots. But the coin is happily graded UNC 80. What a joke!!!!

Is anyone going to the "Informal CGS Forum Meeting" next Saturday (6th December 2014)? I got an email but I'm working and it's only of passing interest to me.

Might be a good place to air any views on how long it takes to process submissions and the apparent conflict between 'paying customers' and when they have to slab auction material for London?

Bill Pugsley is the contact.

I would be careful about CGS. They are not an independent grading body. Too many people have complained that they under-grade third party coins and over-grade coins they sell on. How on earth is this an Unc coin http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?searchlot=2948&searchtype=2&page=Catalogue

Looks NEF to me.

Even if you allow for striking problems rather than wear, there's no way it ranks 80!

Thanks, that's the reason I'm not sure if grading is worth while on it.

A very warm welcome to the forum Ray!

18 months ago I was interested in discovering CGS first hand and judging them from personal experience. I visited them, witnessed their grading process, and submitted a few batches of coins. Many discussions and pics are available on this thread, including some interesting contributions from Bill Pugsley, who has many hundreds of CGS graded coins and runs the CGS Forum.

TPG discussions are a hot topic here and a sub-forum for TPG threads was created a while back so that they could be visited (or avoided!) more easily.

Certainly CGS are at risk of being perceived as having a conflict of interest, being part-owned (50%?) by London Coins, who sell a lot of CGS slabbed coins. Based on the pics, I would agree that it is very hard to see your example link as UNC, and I have seen many on-the-face-of-it over graded examples at LC auctions.Their early pics (<UIN 18,000 ish) leave a lot to be desired.

On the topic of do they under-grade 'third-party' coins (by which I am guessing you mean coins that have not been submitted by London Coins or for sale at London Coins auctions), my personal experience is that they do not - and I do not see any incentive for them to do so. They are strict in their grading, yes, particularly by US standards (to my mind describing any coin from MS60 to MS62/3 as 'Mint State' is a bit of a joke), and they are very strict (over-strict perhaps) when it comes to cleaning, scratches, and other 'damage' - particularly for early milled and definitely for hammered.

I have shared pics of the coins I have submitted to CGS on this forum before they have been graded, and asked people to 'guess the grade' that would be assigned. By and large the guesses were all within half a grade (as you would hope and expect from anyone) of what CGS assigned, with almost as many coming back higher than guessed as there were lower.

Here are a few examples of coins I have submitted to CGS that were graded slightly higher than I would have expected:

CGS 60 (EF) - my grading would be GVF / NEF

1705_SH_Plumes_1000x500_zps44bb1ab3.png

CGS 82 (Choice UNC) - my grading would be aUNC:

CGS 85 (Choice UNC-BU) - my grading would be aUNC
