The ticket came with the crown, maybe Baldwin's from around 2011.

Dark, reverse B, seven to gap. The common variety (I think?).

GVF or NEF? Hard to tell from the scan. Still, a pound? Bargain.

You should see what some people try and flog 1913 1/3 farthings for - now that's inflation for you!

Here's an interesting question for you all. If you had a time machine and could go back to obtain any coin type to make you a relative profit, what would it be? By this, I don't mean which date of a denomination, just an average date for that denomination. Assuming the coin is UNC which type would see the greatest return on your money in terms of today's value over face value?

I'll offer up the quarter farthing. There 4 farthings to the penny and 240 pennies to the pound, so 960 farthings to the pound, meaning there were 3840 quarter farthings to the pound. A UNC example of the 1852 strike was sold in 2017 by London Coins for £75. If this is a typical price, leaving out commission etc. then the quarter farthing has increased in value by a factor of 288,000. Not bad for such a tiny coin.

By comparison, a gold 1703 Vigo 5 Guineas sold recently for £703,000, which is 669,524 Guineas. That means the Vigo coin has increased by a factor of only 133,904, i.e. not even half of the quarter farthing.

Leaving money out of it though, I'd always opt for the 5 Guineas given the choice!!!

Hi

I'm sure you must have recognised the coins as I received two tickets in the post from Phil Hutchings yesterday.

I think Phil must have removed the shilling from the slab, something I wouldn't have like to attempt.

No. 114 on my list of illustrated examples. Pity about the larger than usual flat areas because the rest of it is quite well struck with little wear.

If only that area at the top and bottom was well struck up - it would treble the worth of the coin

Quite pleased with this 1860 Farthing - Dies 1 and A I believe, so F496 - which came to me amongst a group of coppers at the market yesterday. A great upgrade for me.
