Coin aquisition of the week.......

To be honest the same place as you guys, trawling dealers sites, coin fairs and auctions. It's got to the point where if I like the coin and the price isn't silly I will grab it but that also means that at some point I will need to thin things out a bit.

Yes....Hat off to you Paul 😊

To find anything decent or scarce i have found you have to put the hours in as they dont just turn up waving a flag to tell you......At least not very often. The good ones plenty people are looking for (not the RANG on ebay ) ,so if you dont constantly keep looking and asking then someone else will have bought it if the price is fair or spotted it in an auction.

Your second point of thinning things down , yes i agree if you have two get rid of one,IMO its pointless just hoarding them as the money probably better spent on something else.

Very Very nice coins. I especially like the 1892 3d where do you find coins like this😍

Without disagreeing about the superb quality of those coins, I suspect their particular appeal may owe a lot to the photography.

Happy to talk about the pics and how I take them. The back ground is black neoprene. The light source is a single daylight lamp directly overhead. The coins are at around a 15 degree angle under the lamp to enable me to get them in the light without the camera casting a shadow. He camera lens is at the same angle to ensure the coin appears 'flat in the pictures.

I also suspect they are deliberately underexposed to bring out that dark toned appearance?

Not intentionally at all. The main thing I try to do is get the angle right so any dinks, hair lines etc do show up but also any toning. The lights are off in the room bar the lamp when I take the photos.

I think they are underexposed, but that doesn't seem to hurt the pictures.

Paulus, that is another series that seems a bit unloved, and I actually like - certainly better than the Jubilee coins (with all apologies to Mr 1887!). The reverse is particularly nice. I won a couple but was conservative as I was not able to see the coins.

I was a bit concerned by the seeming  cleaning that seems to have been performed by the main consignor on many of the  coins, though not this one....

I agree. From halfcrown down to shilling I think they're far superior to the Jubilee series. I also much prefer the OH to the JH.

I had a fortunate pick-up of decent quality British Silver yesterday at market - 19 in all including 4 Hammered Shillings. This is one of the milled that has made it into my collection as an upgrade:

This is another - I am an absolute sucker for this design of William & Mary Half Crowns - one of the most elegant reverses I know of:

Such a lovely reverse I just could not resist! Guess if I want much better strikes I should be looking at proofs! 1885_fl_01_ref_01741_02_2400.jpg

I totally need to get that kind of consistency on my photos.

Not entirely sure about the 1887 but even theough they aren't my faves, the 1934 really is good!
