Ebay's Worst Offerings

I guess we shouldn't laugth about this one

sad really

That's a genuine one in the picture, that will mysteriously get "lost in the post" on the way to the successful bidder, I'm thinking?

(With a feedback score of 97.7, it looks decidedly iffy!)

Here is a link to the photo of the 1933 (with some other rare pennies) on Tony Clayton's site:

OMG, that's a direct steal. The successful bidder will be one unhappy bunny. It's up to £38 which is £38 more than I want to throw away!

£9.99? I hope it's the 50% silver version at the very least. Somehow I doubt it though. Still, as you say, a free plastic sleeve.. :D

In fairness, he might mean the hard plastic that Natwest/Lloyds issued with it... that must be worth at least an extra 50p!

I can't imagine anybody paying a thousand quid for this 1826 Two Pounds. It looks more like it should have chocolate in the middle.

I've seen chocolate coins with better outers than that! It actually doesn't look like a worn coin so much as a fake or an acid victim (does gold dissolve in acid?)

Gold can be dissolved in aqua regia: a mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid.

(does gold dissolve in acid?)

Gold is not affected by most chemicals, hence it keeps it's lustre over millenia

Can be dissolved in Aqua Regia (50/50 concentrated hydrochloric and nitric acids) also soluble in mercury, which is one method of extraction from low yielding ores - mercury can then be boiled off

:)

David

PS Please do not try either method at home!

These lots always make me laugh, especially the blatant lie of "genuine legal tender". These coins have several things going for it:

A) Non-legal tender coins being advertised as such

B) A "certificate of authenticity" that is recognized by "every monetary authority" which somehow authenticates it as a "collector" product

C) The fact it is a coin with crap on it

D) A plastic case worth more than the coins itself

Of course, I suppose I'd prefer the Harry Potter coins to the seller's other offerings including a hideous gold plated $2 bill found here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310337318424 or the Obama/Lincoln/Kennedy presidential dollar coins, as if the presidential dollar series wasn't ugly enough http://cgi.ebay.com/OBAMA-JFK-LINCOLN-24K-GOLD-PRESIDENTIAL-DOLLAR-COIN-SET-/310338962372?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4841a4c3c4

There is a market for this tat and long may it reign that a fool and his money are parted.

On Ebay UK we don't experience the indepth rubbish and luckily only a few newspaper adverts. However Ebay listings have developed into item after item of rubbish.

If anyone could advise on how to ignore certain sellers it would be appreciated.

Do your normal search, Peter, and look in the filters area on the left of the screen.

Under "Seller", hit Specifiy Sellers

A box will pop up. Check the box marked "only show items from", change the drop down to "Exclude", and paste in the names of those you want to ignore, separated by commas. Then hit Go to close the box, and click Save Search at the top of the page.

I call mine "No Junk sellers", and my ignore list is enormous. I'm quite happy to share it if you want...

DM to be on the safe side, I guess. Though it wouldn't really stand up in court if someone sued - "He put me on his junk list!" :D

All sent, Gents.

I'm sure if their stuff isn't good enough for me, it won't be good enough for you 3 either...

In addition to ignoring certain sellers, I put this in the search bar at the top too, so even more junk (& gold!) gets eliminated

Looks like I must have been eliminated in the past. :D

Seriously though, you can see why people list junk - if it is going to sell anywhere, it is on ebay. Before I stopped selling on ebay a few years ago I listed a fairly low grade 1882/1H 1d, say no better than nVF. It made nearly £60 despite being described as such. An 1846 1d, good fine at best, made £66 despite my feeling embarassed to even consider listing it. Flat discs that sell for £1 - WHY?? A pair of QEII crowns sold. They may have been mint state, but when you sell these you think the good times will never end and it gives an incentive to try even harder.

My eldest has got my "get rid of" box and sold 15 last week and the same again tonight.Looks like we will hit £200+.

I've got enough to last until Xmas. :) I've got a selling and buying ID and never dismiss Ebay as its a 24/7/365 market.

She was doing a Sunday morning paperound...this is much easier.

With Declans help it will make buying far less of a task...hope he doesn't blacklist me  I'll have to list a few Cupro Uncs ;)

I too have a load of crap duplicates that i've accumulated over the years, but have always been nervous about selling on Ebay, Is it better to list everything indvividually or make them into small lots that fit into standard postage rates?

maybe a job for winter, when I can't get into the garden

:)

I think it depends on the individual value and what price you want for them! For instance, a couple of years ago I had a group of 6 very nice condition (EF or better) 1930s/40s farthings - cant remember the dates, so dont ask!

Listed twice as a group for a tenner plus a quid P&P, and got no more than 2 watchers either time!

Listed separately at a quid (plus a quid) each, and sold all 6 to a total of £23 plus P&P! Five even went to the same buyer!
