Did I miss something?

Great Collections bidding on British ebbs and flows, sometimes very low prices, sometimes more standard, sometimes very strong. This last Sunday was the latter. Even then, one lot in particular seemed so excessively high I'm questioning if I missed something about it.

I realize ms65 full red attribution really throws a baseline to the side, but $1000 still seemed beyond anything I had expected, or even thought possible, especially not being handled by the larger auction houses like Stack's or Heritage.

Several other lots did go quite high, just not nearly to the same degree. I'm expecting someone with money to burn (and some cobidders) were out to win no matter what. But maybe there's more to it.

Just a nice coin, I think. Although not that much better than my own specimen bought for £35 in 1999.

Two or more bidders must have really liked it and wouldn't let go.

Not so nice as the Great Collections example - I upgraded 1884, 1885, and 1890 last week.

They were all around the same price, average £31 + commission + really low shipping (all the similar condition)

1885 is below "New" and "Old"

I'm not sure; I've called it a pattern but I've not seen it in hand so it might be a proof but it's probably unique being struck with reverse Freeman K which has the non-heraldically coloured shield.

Thanks, just looked at your rarest pennies listing. Once again, I feel we're all indebted to your perseverance assembling these sites. Especially those of us newer to collecting these, and with not much free time to do a fraction of the exhaustive research accumulated therein.
