South Downs Collection of Shillings at Noonan's

I was at first excited to see this collection come up but unfortunately was let down by the quality of the [surprise!] Victorian and later shillings - many were either much more worn that I'd hoped for and really nothing too outstanding. I will have to wait for a few bits I suppose...

I guess the most interesting bit was an error of sorts, the 1927 shilling with LEX in place of REX in legend. This looks fairly convincing but I rather hate when there is a lot of wear to a coin with legend errors as it seemingly would not be hard to remove the upper and middle stroke to the "E" in REX in this case.

Yeah, I don't believe it's a genuine Mint error, not even for a nanosecond.

You know I had to have a second look at this auction. Lo and behold, there smacking me in the face was an exceptional 1838 Shilling with "no WW" to base of bust. Not a huge deal but this is not even mentioned in Spink and apparently is quite rare as I have seen precious few about; it was estimated at 200-300 pounds which seemed laughable and went for 1700!

Prices were quite soft in general for the lower grade material and some of the varieties didn't do as well as I expected, but that's probably indicative of the market at the moment - it's pretty dead.

I was underbidder on the 1817 I/S which surprised me that it had very little interest. It started at only 95 with the commission bids and it was just me and the single book bidder going for it. I wanted it for stock. I sold it to him for 480 in 2008 when there were 4 known and after I got my existing example as a replacement. I still only have 8 recorded in the database, but I guess if it isn't in the book it goes under the radar. There are more GEOE/Rs than that, and they tend to fly.

Ah, thanks Rob. That was the impression from watching the bidding from here on the 'net. Would you be at liberty to say if there were mainly dealers or if there were collectors?

I seem to have noticed that the market for even somewhat worn material, even if of scarcer variety, is a bit off. Although there are many others, typical would be the 1863/1 shilling which is at least a bit scarce & it seemed to go for very little. It also seemed as if the consignor was a bit more enthusiastic about the earlier milled shillings as opposed to the Victorian material...

I was bidding online too. I picked up 4 lots, which must mean the prices were not as strong as usual. I got the 1863 as an upgrade, but not the 1863/1.

I will post pics once I have them in hand.

Nice buy on that Paddy - I think some of the scarcer coins not in top condition went for chips....I'd like to have seen a few of these in person but London/Mayfair is a bit of a stretch from here in Maryland. I want to see the "True View" at PCGS of the 1838 "No WW".

Devon to Mayfair is not much easier! I didn't view in person either - just trusted to their photography. (Noonans are reasonably reliable, unlike some of the others.)

In fact I nearly missed the auction entirely. It was only an article on the BBC website on the morning of the sale that alerted me to it.

The others I got were: the 1663 Shilling lot 14 as an upgrade; the 1672 Shilling lot 23, filling a gap; and the 1725 Shilling lot 163 as an upgrade.

Well spotted! A great buy for anyone into the variations. I have just checked back and you are correct - Irish and Scottish shields switched across.

I don't go looking for that sort of thing, so probably miss some bargains. I am content with a decent example of each date.

I'm afraid that I didn't spot it. I picked up the attribution from a shilling collector on Facebook. I managed to win one 'want,' and then noticed that the 1671 plumes shilling wasn't bid on, so I snaffled it just in time. Later on, I found a couple of other varieties of Victorian shillings were not bid on, so I got those for well under the expected price. All round, I'm pretty pleased.

I didn't get all the ones I was interested in - the bidding went too high - but like you I pout in late bids on a couple that seemed to be going very cheap. I am also very pleased with my wins and should have them in hand very soon.

Ah, do share the varieties of Vickies. I need to get schooled, but I really have stuck to the main types & left most of the lettering varieties - if that is what you are referring to. I think I was initially put off by all the reported cleaning on the site - as per the OP above.
