Gothic Crown for sale on the Royal Mint website

I'm off to the RM tomorrow to bag me a couple of SYO 50p's. To start the year off, they will be the old "New Pence" reverse. I'll also see what's new on the shelves while I'm there, and will probably spend a few more minutes drooling over the Victoria proof set in the big pink heart shaped case.

I am intrigued when I hear members ask or suggest that a coin "should be sent to the royal mint for authentication" ...of course they would have all that was needed to verify the trueness of a coin , but what is it they have that any other collector might not have? Presumably they are not likely to want to spend any time or effort to authenticate a coin considering the replies recently on a point of clear information (how many of X coin were minted in X year) How difficult is it to have this information on a computer? But I am keen to know what they would do , weigh it, measure it, glance at it, I am sure they are not likely to send it away for scientific analysis. I suppose they might just have a spectrometer but if I recall when using one of these it would not come cheap. So considering they will only be doing the exact same thing any one of us could do sitting in the rectory or in your spare room.....why bother to send it? What I find difficult to accept is the statement of authority seems a little disproportionate if only minor expenditure of time and money is their duty. What else could they be doing to authenticate? any ideas ?

Could anyone please give me a quick explanation of the manufacture of early milled silver? I have read some of the strawing process which suggests that some of the black flow lines in the early silver coins are the result of putting the hot planchets once die pressed onto to damp straw. Were the planchets hot when introduced to the press? there are some interesting old images of the milling process but I cannot find out the exact process, or just have not looked hard enough. I have read the books on the changes that Sir Isaac newton seemed to have some responsibility for when keeper of the mint but there is not a lot of detail. I am particularly interested in the later 17th C and early 18th C although as I see the same in GII coins up to mid 18th C. Some help please. THanks

I recently bought a new 2017 Tom Kitten 50p however upon inspection it appears to be a mint error. It appears that on the front with Tom Kitten the queen is appearing through from the back (her nose appears on the left of toms face and her crown above toms head) and on the back with the queen you can see toms ears above her head. I have heard it could be ghosting or clashed die? Could anybody give me any advice on this? Apologies for pictures was hard to show up in natural light. The coin itself is brilliant uncirculated encapsulated as shown in the pictures
