Suppose this needs a thread of its own

I like the sound of that. Maybe members could post examples of cleaned / dipped coins such as Matt's halo coin above and then take some of us less experiences collectors through what to look for.

I'd guess he's referring to the dark red colour.

Maybe. I am always just amazed how these things are recognised. I would have said it looks okay, and its never easy telling from a picture what the real colour of a coin is.

I am going to put it out there and make a point that I often see on here someone put a coin up for others to see and sometimes the reply comment is just "cleaned" or "dipped" with no further explanation.

It would be good if the person replying gives a bit of a reason why. I enjoy learning from everyone on the forum, but I think it can put some people off from posting if things are explained rather than just cleaned or dipped.

  3. If you got it for free, then well done.

From you photo I am going to say it's better than VF but your photo is a bit grainy to pick up the fine detail but it looks to be in good condition. I reckon it's worth about what you did not pay for it maybe even a little bit more.l

The halfpenny appears to have been partially covered by another coin for a long while. The darker part of the coin was exposed to light and the lustrous part was hidden.

If that is the case it's interesting to think how long they were left undisturbed. The coin looks to be a good grade. It might have just been left and then rediscovered several years later.

  5. I have never considered myself as much of a collector, over the years I have toyed with the idea of collecting something but then thought what is the point, whatever it was it would sit in a cupboard gathering dust and being forgotten about.

Coins for me are a little different, I am not collecting them so that I can show them off, its purely for my own pleasure. I enjoy a Sunday afternoon with a cup of tea and no one bothering me with my modest collection in front of me. I will pick one at random and give it a good hard looking at under a loupe. I like the way the light shine across the surface and shows of the toning or I may notice something that I missed previously.

I guess what I am saying is that its something just for me and no one else and I don't have to try and convince anyone otherwise.

I do get a satisfaction from buying them and looking for ones that I don't already have and of course who does not love an upgrade:wub:

This forum also plays a big part in the process, I think without it I would have probably gone off the boil.

    ex wife

Yes Pete, but I have got a second chance with a very nice lady? This time I intend to not be a silly boy and go through all that again.

it seems so far that my only bad habit is coin collecting and having virtual conversations on a forum.

she seems okay with that one?

    bad habits die hard.

Oh lets not even talk about bad habits. I am sure my ex wife could fill a book about mine.

If only I was collecting coins at that time, it might have kept me out of all sorts of compromising situations:o

That's sensible bidding there Ian, something some of us should observe sometimes :D

Snipe can mean sitting there and clicking a few seconds before the auction ends, but can also refer to sniping as in placing a bid through a third party site which will bid through your account on your behalf, at a designated time. This is why sometimes even when you snipe with a second to go you still get beaten, the auto snipes can bid it within milliseconds of the auction ending. If you already knew that, I've read your post wrong and I'm sorry -_-

Nothing to apologies for Matt. I am aware that there is software that will do the sniping for you, I figure if someone wants it that badly then they can have it and I will get the next one.:)

My method works for me and stops me from getting carried away with last minute panic bidding. A lesson it took me a while to learn.

Like most of us on here I have probably paid too much for some coins but I have also been lucky and picked up a few gems at a good price. Its all swings and roundabouts and as long as at the end of the day I am happy with what I have bought thats the main thing:)

  9. If we are talking about ebay tactics. I work out my upper limit that I would pay for something. I do this by checking price from whatever price guide I have to hand, I have also started looking at auction and dealers sites.

I then make the bid normally a few hours ahead of the end time, then I turn off eBay and wait for the email to tell me if I have one or lost.

This may not work for everyone and I really cannot be bothered with snip bidding.

I have tried watching the bidding but all that does is make me make impulse bid higher than I should.

I seem to get around 70% of the coins I bid on and the ones I don't get I am not worried about as there will be another one along at some point.
