Yes, there's also what looks to be a shadow of a letter, maybe V, after the S too?
Thanks for that. Very interesting, and something I'd not considered. I hadn't noticed a shadow 'I' either. Do you mean slightly angled and just to the left of the Tertivs 'I'? if it is it would probably also be in alignment with the wonky lower V'.
I'd say it's not a variety, but rather a die identifier...it looks to me, especially as you can also see the shadow of an 'I', that a coin got stuck in the machine and damaged the die? Or, and I don't know anything about this, do they reuse (grind off [not completely]) the old dies, as they sometimes do with hammered?Has anyone seen one of these before? It isn't listed anywhere as a known variety.
V over a much lower V in Tertivs. Not simply a double struck letter. The underlying V is way out of alignment.
Apologies. The condition isn't great, but the variety is very clear.
Your thought please?

You could be right. I hadn't noticed that either. Hard to tell if its the shadow of a letter or simply surface wear.

Thanks for the referral to Colins website, didn't realise there could be so many varieties of the same year type. I bought one of my first coins from him, a Lima sixpence, which intrigued me after reading the story about how they came to be.
Variety being the spice of life
.For early milled Scott and Rob are the experts here.

Excellent advice for you from Stuart there, Arthur. Colin's site will provide you with lots of detailed information on all major varieties from 1760 to 1956. Colin Cooke's collection (which I gave you the link to) is a great place to learn about the earlier stuff.
I'm sure you'll enjoy the forum. There are people here whose depth of knowledge is truly astonishing and who will always be happy to help and advise you on building your collection.
Regardless of grade respect to you for finding a 1717 dump farthing with which to start. Most impressive!

Hello Arthur.
You can find out a lot about farthings here:

The UNC has wear to the cheek, neck, and hair.
Nick is correct. Each coin is marked one grade higher than it actually is.
Don't worry about it. We are all here to learn.

Well done Mckenzie, but open your eyes, coincraft is the worst place to buy, darkly lit and Dickensian, its like that so you don't see the shite they're selling you

He should join the forum.

Happy Birthday Paulus. Hope you have a good one.

Likes dates on his, apparently? Very strange! So still no answer to the conundrum
David
Nor did he tell you what was his favourite pizza. What kind of a man is he?

...and a milled edge.
Though given a choice he'd probably prefer a bun…….

OK, say you bid on something that ends early morning, or when you are not online, and you win the item.
it used to tell you you had unpaid item, on your my ebay screen in the box on the side, regardless if you were sent an invoice or not, so if you won.
sometimes you get invoiced for said item, before you get back on.
and the bought items you have to scroll below your watch list.
so if someone who was bidding, comes on, has a quick look and sees no unpaid items because they got invoiced.
it is basically ebay making life harder for everyone by making stupid, unneeded changes.
No worries. Got it. Thanks.

Near VF obverse. Slightly less than that for the reverse. You were right to question this, I think.
Looking for a second time. I'd actually probably say the opposite.
Near VF reverse and a little less for the obverse.

Grading is as Always subjective, i don't know which British dealers he spoke to, maybe whom he bought it from and in turn in order to return profit they've said GVF or so, but for me the coin is no more than VF IMHO
When grading, don't forget the golden rule:
'Is it selling, or is it buying?'…….

-
when you buy an item, in your buying screen it tells you, in a box.
outbid
ending soon
watched items ending
awaiting feedback
when you win something it shows
unpaid items
the seller sends invoice through ebay, that disappears and doesnt show unpaid invoices.
if the buyer won something, they might not know.
Apologies Scott. I'm probably being very dim here, but I'm even more confused than before!

I'm more frustrated by the unpaid item thing disappearing when someone sends an invoice, and then doesn't bother to tell you you have the invoice.

Michael Gouby is a very nice bloke. Always willing to find time to respond to emails about penny varieties.

Could be a few minutes before Rob gets back, he's just popped out to buy 2kgs of coffee and order a pizza for midnight!

In the words my daughter at the age of 4, 'Hello friends, I am here!'
Never the modest one and always melodramatic, she has turned out to be a balanced, well mannered and sensible member of society. Who would have thought that?

Sorry Stuart, don't do take away pizzas. Coffee is another matter.
Nor me - not one of them does my favourite: Seafood pizza. Yet when I phoned Pizza Hut to challenge them on this, they told me they did do them in their restaurants! Pfffft.
And while we're at it: who the hell was it decided pineapple would be something to use as a topping? No one Italian I'd wager…..
I love pineapple as a pizza topping

Fair dooz Colin. No offence intended. As my gran used today: 'It would be a very dull garden if all the flowers were of the same hue'…..

Yes, he loves correcting speling erors!PM Chris Perkins if it bothers you. He'll do it.

Damn right! Mind, a Persian Chicken Biryani really does come with banana...
Now were talking. There's a fine use for the contents of the fruit bowl!

My wife thinks we all need to 'Get a life.'

As in lifesize genuine 1933 penny? I'd go along with that

E would certainly modify her 'anoraks' opinion if I were to bring home one of those. Scott. Found one yet? I'll buy it from you…..
