  1. Following Stuart's suggestion I'm moving my requests for Everson IDs from 'Acquisition of the Week' over to here. Makes much more sense to continue this under the British Hammered' banner.

    Anyway:

Here's another. Interestingly, this one is badly cut and includes part of the beaded border of the next coin on the strip.

What is the PM? To me it looks like an acorn.

  2. I've received this reply from the seller, but I see the listing remains unchanged.

    YOU:

    Hi Jbro,

The Henry VIII groat you have listed is a modern pewter (not silver) replica made by WRL. If you look at the reverse you will see their stamp to the left of the shield. These replicas are sold on presentation cards and are available on line and in museum gift shops for a couple of pounds each.

    Kind regards,

    Mchael

  3. I emailed the guy and he admitted it was a replica, so lowered the price from £90...to £30.

If we could all email him, that'd be great - as some naive sod has bid: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/jbro80005/m.html?item=181637523237&hash=item2a4a70a725&pt=UK_Coins_BritishHammered_RL&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

    Done.

As well as drawing his attention to WRL being clearly stamped in the reverse field I've also told him its not silver.

At least the buyer will be able to return under the 'not as described' option if he/she realises the mistake once the 'coin' is received.

  4. Stuart passed this on to Tim Everson who responded below:

If a contemporary counterfeit it is indeed of very fine work, especially when compared with others of the same period.

Thank you for showing me this most interesting coin. Nice that it is in such nice condition too. As you say the punctuation is the same as my 129i on the obverse, the reverse is unusual in having a stop after FRAN rather than an apostrophe stop. It is of good style but it was well spotted of you concerning the fleur de lis on the sceptre tops. They do not look right and it makes me thin that 129i was perhaps an excellent counterfeit as I think this is rather than poor genuine piece. It is new to my book and I would classify it as follows:
130g*. (BMC 252)pm Woolpack. Obverse as 129i. Reverse 2 but stop after FRAN. Six strings. Die axis 0. [ER]
(It is now the author's opinion that this piece and 129i may be counterfeit because of the upright die axis and the unusual obverse readings)
Thanks again so much for this
    Happy Christmas
    Tim
