    About a year ago I bought one that could have been a rarer variety, I think the seller cottoned on to it and they 'couldn't find it anywhere' after I'd bought it. Funnily enough they messaged me back about 2 months later to say they'd found it, the funny thing was that it had somehow worked it's way into a slab while being lost. I guess they sent it off to check for varieties and when it came back as bog standard they offered it back to me.

    Tethered shooting is good (and makes you feel like a pro while doing it :D) but really depends on your preference. When I take pictures there's no need to have the image on the computer because the viewfinder is good enough for me, also moving files across to the computer is nice and quick. Just saves buying an extra bit of kit really, but can definitely be beneficial, especially if you're taking 20+ pictures all in one go.

    Definitely right there Nick, such a difficult task capturing the true lustre.

    I don't know if you already have, Paul, but take a look at the different lighting colours for different metals. I find white lights work amazingly with silver bits and lights with a slightly yellow tinge work much better for copper/bronze. For example, first picture was using an 7W LED white light and the second using a regular 500w(?) house light bulb. The setup and location was the same, just the lights were changed, lots of difference. Both coins are practically the same in terms of lustre.

     

    You can see the juxtaposition just from the background which is just a thick white piece of card. Grey in one picture and brown in the other, neither of which is the actual colour :D

    For the majority of coins it's going to be a case of the condition that they're in, so if the condition is similar to the penny then probably not worth much. Although the 1917 threepence will have an intrinsic value due to it's silver content (.925), but only a few pounds, if that. The 1948 farthings are ten a penny, only a few quid tops and it would have to be in excellent condition even to fetch that.

    Hi Hazel,

    Unfortunately it's not worth anything, it's a bit too closer to looking like a washer than a coin! Nothing rare about this date which would be the only thing to give it any value when a coin is that worn. There is a variety for this year that less than 10 examples are known for, but this is just the normal variety..

    Yes, Dave's spot on in that it's a defective planchet. Imperfections in the metal will do that, among other things. 

    Also if you bought it from a dealer you shouldn't be concerned that they might not take it back, 99% will. If they don't then it's probably not a good person to do business with.

    My point is that, in the UK and Ireland, there are no folders or albums for the decimal coins, i.e. from ½p upwards.

    This is a disincentive for collectors to collect.

    On the plus side, there are still plenty of old Whitman folders from the 60's available for the pre-decimal series.

    Did you spot Brian's post above? He's right, there are actually a lot of decimal folders out there, although I have to admit I haven't seen one for 1/2 pennies, but they were only around for just over a decade after decimalisation..
