Having read their website http://www.lcgrading.co.uk/  a bit more, I think it was just rather carelessly put together. Under the benefits of coin grading tab, they have forgotten about the change of name and call themselves CGS UK a few times.

In FAQ, they mentioned that "LCGS has graded over 40,000 coins as at 2016". Not true unless they are admitting that LCGS is the same as CGS.

The 'Key benefits of coin grading' is literally copypasta from CGS site, that's why it says CGS all over it. They're missing pictures too.

Also - "Hall of Fame collections can create a large attraction if offered in the London Coin Auctions adding significantly to the realise value." So why is it that only through consignment to LCA does the value increase? They're like a kid that thinks they're extremely venerated, when in actual fact nobody likes them.

What is meant by "to left/right of bead" and "to space".

I'm about to go through a load of 2p coins looking for rares, so am doing some research.

The beads around the rim, for example an I in ELIZABETH might point directly to one of the beads in the rim, to the left or right slightly of a bead or in between 2 beads (to space)

If it's any help, Matt, the Fitzwilliam museum have all old auction catalogues, and the Christies auction of 23rd October 1984, is amongst them. Here's the link It's a bit antiquated as you have to scroll down under C to find Christies. That shows that they hold the catalogue for that auction, but it's not clear whether you are only able to view within the museum itself, or whether they would send you a copy for a fee.

There is an e mail address you can make enquiries at.

Thanks Mike I'll give it a go

I am very sad - I collect ALL denominations of British milled coins, but I have confined myself to standard issues so far. I have examples of all the Standard pennies with and without H except the mega-rare. I have the same for Halfpennies and farthings except a few early tin ones. (To do this I have been prepared to take coins in any condition to start with and have then gradually upgraded.) I have quite a few varieties of Pennies and halfpennies that I have been able to identify, but I do not know if any of my "standard" ones are actually rarer varieties. (Most have come from collections bought at Car boot sales and general auctions, so most have not been through the hands of a serious collector recently.)

Hence my interest in learning more and spending some happy winter months going through them and, hopefully, finding a few pleasant surprises!

What about the pennies with KN?

If you want to do some penny variety hunting, you can't go wrong looking here

What's your period of collecting (as in 1860 - 1970)?

  5. PS - I've changed your name to reflect your email, I don't think 'trusted dealer' is an apt handle for a brand new member, and we have a specific group for dealers that are trusted and used by the forum ;) if you want to change it to something different please let me know.

  6. The new Freeman is the new publication from Chris, it's an updated version, have a look here for a list of all the books that are sold by Chris (including that new Freeman)

    I would definitely recommend that, and the following;

    - Gouby (http://www.michael-coins.co.uk/) I believe you can buy them directly from him, ask him to sign it if you do ;)

    - Groom (a forum member here) you can buy his book here > https://www.amazon.com/Identification-British-Century-Bronze-Varieties/dp/1409285502 and is a must if you want to seriously get into varieties, it has a lot in there that the others don't cover

You can get Peck, it's a great book but most is covered in these 3 books. Depending on how far back you go, there are other publications like Jerrams' study (I forget the name) on early Victorian bronze or Bramah (but I think that's coppers only).

The first 3 will get you where you want to go for now :)

Blimey that 'Bait and Switch' complaint is grim reading! Hope the guy got his money back, but surprised he went ahead with the deal in the first place!

Wow, I thought at first it was a reporter doing some sort of sting operation and playing stupid to catch them doing something illegal. $10,000 just like that.
